Hello from Poland (steering damper)
My name is Mariusz. I am from Poland. I have BMW R 80 RT with sidecar (from Dnepr).
I am editor of "Swoimi Drogami", polish free, on-line magazine: www.swoimidrogami.pl
Now I try to find technical informations about sideecar steering damper. Do you have or could you recommend something (book)?
Use a damper off of a VW beetle, not the super beetle. These work well and can be found all over the world.

That is what came stock with my Harley sidecar a VW beetle steering dampener.
There are two lengths of extension for the VW dampers. The early ones were about 7 1/2" the later ones were about 6 7/8".
Some have a threaded eye, the ones used on the Harleys have an angled rod with threaded end.

Okay,
Look on the tech section for the getting started withb a sidecar thread.
Also see some installation hints at the Sidecar Industry Council site.

We make a bracket that picks up the two bolts that hold the fender onto your bike. The other end we weld a tab to your upper front strut. We do offer this in a kit for $200 but you should be able to do some thing similar in Poland rather then ordering parts all the way from the USA

Why do you need sideecar steering damper?
You may not need a damper at all. We find if the mounts are well designed and the alinment is correct more often then not we do not need a Damper. Some times going to a flat profile front tire will help. Your BMW should have an 18 inch front wheel in which case you can run a Metzler K block which comes in one size only 4.00 18. Earlier BMW's with a 19 inch front wheel can run an Avon sidecar triple duty which comes in one size only 3.50 19

Thank you for useful hints.
Sidecar Industry Council - good site.
What do you think about sidecar steering damper from Mercedes 190?
With a flat front tire how does it do when you are flying the chair?

popp,, blubl, blubleee, crawummm....
nearly, nearly under a bridge in a hard left turn....
my hairs raise just remembering.
Why have a steering damper? Cause it is cheap life insurance. Dave Talley had beautiful rig the he lost control of in a corner with washboard bumps.
He spent most of the next year healing various broken bones and injuries that he might not have had if he had been equipped with a damper.
