Harley sidecar in the Sacramento, Ca.area
I posted on the tech forum with no responce. Is there anyone in the Sac, area with a tle mounted on a 99 to 06 Road King? O4 would be best. I have what Harley says are all the right parts but the front upper mounts do not line up. I need to look at someone elses setup. Thanks, Dick
Did you buy the 1999-2007 install kit?
i just put one on my 2002 FLHTC...Fit perfect..
Thank you for the reply. We have several HD dealers in the Sacramento Valley. None have anyone who has worked on sidecar rigs. The dealer in Sacramento sold me what was represeted as a complete install kit matched to unit and bike. Not much of the kit fit. I did find a 05 road glide/sidecar on the floor in Carson City, Nevada at the HD dealer. At least now I know what I need. I have been riding sidecar rigs about 40 years but this is my first HD rig to install. I also have a motorvation rig and a old jawa unit. Again thanks. Dick
what you REALLY NEED is the harley sidecar manual - it lists all the parts and has pictures and drawings of what goes where

I have the sidecar manual and it provides very little year specific info. Thanks for the reply.
are you taking the OWNERS MANUAL?
or the SERVICE MANUAL
ill be a donut you are looking at the little owners manual that tells you at most how to change a tire
the service manual is about 5/8" thick 8.5" x 11" dense - has all the fitment charts, all the parts, all the stuff to make various year sidecars attach to various year bikes - all the wiring diagrams for lights and sound
and on and on

I have the service man. but it only covers the years it's issued for mine is a 88 tle to go on a 04 king. I found a 05 rig in carson city so I think I now know whats needed. I am going to have to fab the upper front bar. but the rest seems to work. again thanks
then you need a 04 manual
the way the manual works is you get the manual for the newer of the two parts - the bike or the sidecar - from the dealer or from ebay - they are in ebay all the time.
then you look up in the manual the cross for the year of sidecar to the year of bike
it then gives you the kit you need AND the info on what parts are different - and a reference to find them and a list of all the parts in the kit.
looking at other bikes is not necessarily going to get you what you want
rear mounts for example - there are three bolt and two bolt - but there are several variations of two bolt some have a pin hole for the pin in the rubber bushing and some have a bar - both are only obvious when holding the rear mount in your hand [or in my case i had several of them.... *sigh*]
however from 04 to 06 the front mounts upper and lower are the same
remember all the invisible stuff that goes on the bike.

by upper bar i think you are talking about what hd calls the front brace?
its a long spring steel tube that clamps to the frame under the body of the sidecar?
im pretty sure its not just dom tube - it behaves like spring steel & is flexible

I bought a new 87166-99b install kit...You can google that part # and it gives you the instructions..
I also put a 1988 TLE on my bike..My bike is a 2002 FLHTC...Everything fit perfect and the instructions were awesome...
I dont think that front brace is spring steel..It appears to be just tubing...You loosen the 2 clamps to get you lean angle...Have yo loosened the clamps?
You should be able to move that bar to were you need it...Hb
87166-99b kit fits 1999+
i pressume to 2006 or 07..
Kit Number
87166-99B
Models
This kit is designed and provides the mechanical components
required to attach the TLE/TLE-Ultra Sidecar to 1999 and later
Touring Model Motorcycles. This kit also contains the components
and procedures required to install the Steering Damper
Kit (Part Number 87142-
1985-1998 TLE cars have the same mounting bars...
Your bike will use the 2bolt rear mount
I think they quit usung the 3 bolt in 1992 or 93
Everything should bolt right up as mine did..
The new install kit was available from HD for around $800.00 and there was more left when i got mine in the summer...
I order my kit thru a CDn dealer and got it in a week..
It came with everything, even a bank angle sensor which I didnt put on, plus I kept my bikes right signal active and all works fine ..
Hi again, This is where is starts to go south. The dealer list and service book show the 04 Road King and the 88 tle use the same upper mount and bar. This one has a tapered boss on the mount and a like socket on the bar. The 06 has a smaller mount with a through bore on both with a bolt to hold them in place. I have a correct 2 hole rear mount. The front lower mount has changed to threaded bolt holes instead of the nut and bolt setup on the 88 mount. It will work but gets real close to the oil filter housing. I may convert it with helicoils or move up to 7/16 bolts on the two bolts that get close. The dealer in Sac. said flatout they will not mount any more sidecars as no one has the training. My big problem is the front upper bar will not aline with the car frame if bolted at the top. If the bar is mounted on the car frame it won't line up with the upper mount. It looks like I will have to fab this part myself. Not a real big job just cut, mount both halves and weld to make them meet. I have been doing frame mods on choppers starting in the 60s. I would like to have the correct bar but it seems that's out of the question at this time. Again thanks for your input.
I have an 04 Ultra Classic and have the parts book for the bike out (which has the sidecar parts in it). The parts book is for all touring models. It shows the upper mount has the tapered boss on it and corresponding recess on the sidecar bar. The sidecar bar slides in and out by loosening the clamps where it is mounted to the frame of the sidecar under the boat. This is how the leanout is adjusted on the bike. The lower mount is very close to the oil filter. (Hey the oil filter is a pain with the sensor right there anyway.)
The part number on the sidecar brace for 04 is The "B" means its the 3 change for the brace. The upper mount for the bike is #87131-83C. Maybe you need to change one or the other.
How do you mean the bar doesn't line up? is it in front or or behind the other? or what. the only mount that is really "fixed" on the sidecar is the front one, the rear mount can be moved forward and back and the upper brace can slide back and forth again giving you the lean out.
the brace is flexible - and it wont "just line up" it mounts with a small amount of stress on it
yes the brace looks like plain tube - but it does flex especially when the sidecar wheel goes over a pothole its the one part i would not cut or weld on if it was me - ymmv. the top mount comes in two lengths - prior to that [way back] the old brace went to the middle of the frame & bolted on a boss in the center, then there are two braces that mount to the side of the frame for two lengths... so it IS possible that your sidecar has the wrong brace on it for the bike you are mounting it to.
the bracket should just go right on
