Glue for TLE carpeting?
Well I'm finally ready to bite the bullet and mount the tour rack on my TLE (the beer and time routine has stopped working).
My question is: what is a good glue to fasten the carpet liner to the fiberglass? I assume that the carpeting must be pulled away to fasten the rack rather than drilling and bolting right through everything.

Hi,
You can use 3-M Weatherstrip Adhesive. It comes in a tube at auto stores. It's yellow in color and also makes good gasket cement. Use it sparingly and avoid getting it on the outside paint.
Good luck drilling those holes....measure twice and drill once. Use some large washers on each side of each connection point to spread out the pressure when you tighten up since you will ever after have a place where cracks might start at each hole. Sorry, but it's true. BTDT.
3M General trim adhesive #08088 is the best.
This comes in a spray can and is easy to apply.

Thanks guys!
Actually, the preferred method is to pass the fasteners through the carpeting. Be careful and go slow, the instant the bit breaks through the glass.... stop. Then with a razor knife cut a small "X" in the carpet for the hex bolts.
Only the hex head and washer will be exposed underneath (and inside the trunk), and they will trap the carpet to the underside of the the tub, keeping it secure. If you try to glue the carpet back over the hex head bolts you'll end up with a bulge, and the carpet will never adhere properly again.
I learned the hard way.

That's a good idea. the only reason I didn't think of it is that I get delirium tremens and my mind goes blank when I contemplate drilling holes into the $3,500 tub on my TLE. After a while my mind clears and I find that I have forgotten what happened. LOL

what's about this idea?
First clean out the boat from inside as clean as possible (use window cleaner for the rest of dust and smear.
Make flexible stripes out of nylon, wood, hard ruber or what ever.
Screw into them from the back stuby countersunk screws, Secure them from spinning with locktite.
Glue the stripes with the double sided 3 M stuff into the boat.
In this case I'd use one that has a foam filling to compensate for bad molding and with huge washers or another strip and hat nuts (scretch less the legs) fix the carpet.
Or much easier and smarter.
Back up your carpet with the soft Velcro and mount the scruby velcro into the boat.
I guess the Velcro is the smartest way to go. you get it nearly everywhere, can clean up and dry the carpet separtely. This way you get rid of Schimmel / moho problems. (don't know the engish word for the green stuff on old bread)
Good luck
Sven
Sven,
Is Shimmel german for mildew or mold (the green stuff that's on old bread and the bleu stuff on Roquefort cheese?

Ja. Wirglich.

Abgesehen von der Rechtschreibung habt Ihr beide Recht.
Besides the ortography you both are right.
And when you ride all year round you get frequently roqueford cheese like s/c polstery.

Well the evil deed is done! Just finished mounting the rack on the TLE after measuring 20-30X and procrastinating for a few months.I also drilled about 5-6 gradually larger holes through masking tape to avoid damage and it worked.
I did find that the carpeting pulls away without much trouble and it is too thick to use the mounting bolts supplied so I bolted directly to the body with the rubber and steel washers supplied. The carpet went back into place and held without adding any glue.
Now I'm gonna have that drink.
gnm you should go for it!!
Thanks again for all of your input!
