Airplane drop tanks used to be quite popular (and cheap) after WWII for conversions similar to this.
Hard to find anything cheap anymore though.
Lots of them were used for bikes and automobile (SCTA) racing at the dry lakes in California and Bonneville Salt flats in the '50's.

The drop tank sort of make me wonder what was meant by the bomb statement, but I suppose to some it does look like a bomb. I have seen tons of pics of them in various use as racers, but only a few used as hacks. Makes sense that one could easily adapt one though.
Those are VERY cool! I wish I had a "rocket" sidecar for my Triumph Rocket motorcycle.
