I need advice on how to train my chocolate lab to ride in the sidecar. I was thinking about
having her ride with my son in the sidecar for several rides then have her go solo.

If you have done this I sure would like to know what works. I don't want to frighten her out of riding in the sidecar.

I have a Bouvier des Flandres, at about 82 lbs, and I just put her in the car with her leash on, and she has been happy ever since. Now she rides without the leash and coller, it is in the hack for walks, but she just rides and drools. The hack is a mess afterwards, but the look on her face and all of the others that see us is worth it. My good buddy, has a Jack Russell, older now and not quite as wild, and he rigged a two point leather harnes that attaches to his "bridel" that keeps him in the seat. As long as the hack is moving, he is happy. Will try to get you some pic's.

I just put my dog in the SC and went for a ride.
I used a collar and leash of course, in the beginning.
now I use a harness put on with the metal loop on the bottom, so the short leash keeps the dog from going overboard on a quick turn. dont ask me how I found that out!
now I have 2 small dogs, a Bishon mix and a Lahsa Apso, and both hop in the SC whenever we go for a ride.
hard to take off without them getting all worked up about me going for a ride.
I cant even say that aloud...they will run for the door, all ready to go.

even if the dog sits quietly, they should be restrained. Need to keep them in the SC on turns or a sudden bump, which can throw them over the side, fast!

A harness and two leashes for my 90 lb Lab. Even though she's old, a bump or other unexpected event might make her want to leave. The tough part is getting her in and out of the TLE!

PS: I harness her in using a leather harness and loop OK what they use when they hold you to a back board the trauma strap has a bull clip on each end a I looped it under the seat easy in and out.. the strap is made of seat belt material used in cars....trauma straps can hold 300+lbs so my 45 lb dog w/ tork no problem..also has in the middle a button release so in case of emergency can get the dog out quickley
drive safely with the shiney side up! L

To train my dog Taylor I started getting him familiar with the sidecar, over the course of a few days, by feeding him a bit of ice cream whileinside the sidecar. Then some ice cream with the bike running. Then with a friend sitting behind him to prevent him from jumping out as I let out the clutch. I use a dog harness and a couple quick release Equistrian leads to snap him in. I require him to wear goggles. Leather Roadhawk from Shade Tree powersports at about $25 are great. Need a secound strap to go under his muzzle. Also use Mutt Muff hearing protection for any long trips. We have gone camping at Willville and rode nearly 1000 miles over the past two weekends. Had a good time.

I have a Ural Troyka and my three dogs ride frequently. Actually, I love to ride with one at a time, but they will ride three at a time just as well. I have modified my hack to have three leashes secured inside it. They are no longer than 18" each. I believe a harness connected to a leash protects much better than a leash attached to a dog collar. Put a collar on youself and add a few Gs. The strain is all on your neck. A harness put the strain at a different location than the neck.

Murph gets the most smiles and giggles when he is onboard, and he is a solid chick magnet, but Baby and Bosco each get their share of looks as well.

A sidecar without a dog is just another sidecar.

I just put them in and went riding. No problem in getting them adapted at all. They are smaller dogs; Bichon, Lasha and Schnauzer. Murph will run right up to the hack and sit there in the garage for an hour in waiting for me to come take him for a ride.

"I have a Bouvier des Flandres":
I think I had one of those once when I was in the Phillipines during the Korean conflict.
As I recall, it was delicious.

Sorry, Guys, I just couldn't pass this one up.

Lonnie.

Reading through the dog posts again after replying to Bob Madigan's "Dogs in chair" post... even though this is almost a year old, I feel I have to reply, Lonnie. Here goes, "Ew!!!!" (but it was a good one - caught me off guard!)
