We use an Escort from Champion Trikes and with it's high sides all that's needed is a leash to keep them in place. Some folks have to use a Harness with the more open rigs to keep them from getting hurt.

If your dog is a little spooked by the bike start with letting it simply sit it it off an on over a period of days. A cookie or two may help.
Once it gets used to being in the hack move up to letting the engine run a few times 'till that becomes normal then move on to a few very short rides. After a few of the starter rides you should have a feel for how well it will take to the open road but take it easy for a while and watch for unexpected attempts to jump at things it shouldn't.

Some have had to use a line from front the rear in the rig with a very short leash on a halter to control a few of the more active or agressive dogs. Only you will know how much restraint is needed with your early riding tests in the neighborhood.

We got lucky with our Heelers and have two that always want to go with little control needed. The other one is a nervous rider and has to be medicated a little to prevent her from getting sick or getting tangled up in her leash.

Good luck and take short steps untill you both get comfortable with the arrangement.

Hi jota: We introduced Maddie, our rescued 45lb border collie/chow/lab?, to our Texas sidecar very much as suggested by JerryR. In order for Maddie to sit deeper in the car, we removed the seat and installed a floor and hinged back of plywood covered in trunk carpet with a chain secured by screws to the floor, which attaches to a metal loop on the underside her halter, which keeps her from jumping out at every squirrel she sees. I find it odd that when she tires of the wind over 50mph, rather than lying down in the car, she simply turns around an looks out the back.

I take my yellow lab in the sidecar with me. Here is a photo of one of his first rides, he was about a year and a half old. He's gotten bigger and likes it better with the windshield off.

He has Doggles and a harness that is connected to an eye bolt in the floor of the hack with a short leash that allows him to lay don and sit up but not much else.

Dave

Heck, for some reason I couldn't put a picture from photobucket here. Oh well

I tried to post a couple of photobucket pics earlier. If you copy and paste the diect link that will work. Not quite the same thing but better than nothing.

I just copy and past the HTML code. That way the pics open up with the USCA page. Good luck:o)

We have a big ridgeback-pitbull mix and she wants no part of it. I gave her cookies and got her all comfortable with the seat and bought goggles and as soon as I started the engine she was gone ...never to return. No amount of persuasion could get her back in the hack. She just circles it and barks. Funny thing she LOVES to ride in cars and hang her head out.

Now our little Boston Terrier is the opposite...loves to ride.

Guess they are somewhat like people...it just isn't everyone's bag.

The goggles look like a smart idea to keep the wind and debris out the animals eyes. Would they be available at a place like PetSmart or is there a better place to pick up a pair? My better half seems to think our one cat might like the opportunity to travel about in the side car.

Doggles are available at most Pet stores. The trick is getting them to wear 'em. Mine don't like to and we are looking for some alternative that will work with the Red Heeler who loves to scratch 'em off.

Here, locally, you would have a very limited choice at Pet Smart, even if they actually put their stock of Doggles out on the floor. The days I checked, they simply forgot to stock them on the floor, but pink and silver were the only choices available there. You can do much better by going to the Doggles website and purchasing there, especially, since they show the proper sizing and the various styles available.

I recommend a harnes anchored in at least 2 places. Your dog may or may not jump out, but sudden manoeuvres can send them flying. Just a leash alone won't accomplish this.

New guy here. I will get into background and what not in another post. I am looking at putting a car on my bike and my boxer is the #1 reason for this. I was wondering about how you get them broken into the eye gear. I own convertables and sarge has grown up looking bigger then life with the top down. But, thats not the same as a bike and I want his eyes covered at speed. I just dont know how to go about it at first. The last thing I want to do is get him afraid of them.
Thank you in advance for any help.
Jeff.

I think the Doggles site has advice on that.
Rosie keeps pushing them off when stopped, but at speed she doesn't mind. The only solution is to keep moving... (and have the wife in the tub to keep pushing them back on at stop signs).
