Crossing New Mexico
Crossed New Mexico over the last few days on my way out to Griffith Park.
Head winds exceeded 50mph, sustained, all day. Couldn't get the rig past 60mph, WOT in 4th gear.
Camped 1 night in Santa Rosa. Beautiful! Weatherman said the winds would die down. They got worse. I hate that Weatherman! Gave me a reason to spend another day and night in Santa Rosa State Park relaxing in camp.
Winds the next day were just as bad, only coming at me from about the 10:00 position. Pushing with my right hand and pulling with my left (all day) to keep the combo in a straight line was fun. What was even more hysterical was losing concentration for a second, failing to notice a Tractor Trailer passing on my left, and nearly steering into him when he blocked the wind.
In an instant I was looking at the corrosion pits inside the head of an aluminum body rivet. Think my mom heard me scream out the F word back in Pittsburgh.
Wow! The wind can be a real ordeal. Look for the USCA banner at GP - Gail Perszyk and I will be there - along with many others I'm sure. Enjoy the ride!
Looking forward to meeting you Steve.
In Flagstaff now. Headed for Grand Canyon AZ. tomorrow.
See you next week!
How come you left so early?
I'm leaving Thursday from Boise for the Saturday grits.

Lonnie,
LOL...I left 3 weeks ago!!
Rode the Natchez Trace. Visited some Civil War battlefields. Texas State Fair. High desert of New Mexico. blah blah blah...
See you there.
Man do I know what you mean! In May I went cross country on my BMW RT (no car attached). On I 40 in New Mexico and Arizona the cross winds would blow me right across the lane. We stopped at Meteor Crater where the walking tour was canceled due to high winds.
Stopping never felt so good.
