Does anyone know - for sure - why a number of independent nationwide craigslist search engines are shutting down?

"For sure" ? No. Unless you're writing code for one of these engines, I don't think anybody can say "for sure."

But, according to the blog by the guy who does SearchTempest (which is the one I use), here's the problem--

"Craigslist (with whom we have no affiliation) recently made a change that prevents their pages from being loaded in ‘frames’. Frames are basically sub-windows within another page, like our default results mode at SearchTempest used to use. This caused several other search sites to simply shut down, but we made some changes and are still going strong."

Don't get me wrong. SearchTempest still has lots of problems. Some deleted posts show up, some active ones don't. But it still works a little.

I also use Google to search CL ads limiting results to "posted in the last week" but Google still misses a lot of current ads that definitely do contain my search terms.

I use google, type into google what ever you are looking for in this format. sidecar site:craigslist.org and googel will find all of the sidecars on craigs list for you.

I use SearchTempest http://www.searchtempest.com/
You just type in your location (zip code), what your looking for and how far you are willing to travel for it. This what I used to find my sidecar rig, I kept expanding the distance and finally found what I was looking for in Illinois.
It searches all city's craig lists, and after that any ebay listings within that distance.

I didn't know about this thingweb thing. Thanks for that. I just tried it and it turned up duplicates and removed ads, like they all do, but it also turned up an ad that Google and SearchTempest failed to find for a rig that I might actually be interested in.
