Ok-you have defined the true balance point. Did you answer my question?

What I am looking at is the point where steering reversion does occur(that is: the point where countersteering becomes effective)-does the height this occurs( more precisely the angle of lean, I suppose) change with a given rig and rider with an increase in speed, presuming no other changes in rider technique or input? Are you saying it is the same as the "true balance point", and does not change?

Does it change with a decrease of turning radius, presuming no other changes?

OK Never Mind 🙂

So here it is-The balance point doesn't change; for a given rig, rider&passenger it is what it is. You can move it by changing that combination, including shifting the ballast, ie: moving the rider and or passenger, but speed and turning radius does not change the balance point, and the balance point is where steering reversion occurs.

This must be how that line got in the yellow book 🙂

What changes with speed and turning radius is how quickly you get there -is that right Hal?

Sheesh- I need to go back in the garage and work on putting those four sidecars and a trike together....too much thinking, not enuf doing, I am just confusing myself about things I know. Duh.

By the way, Hal, while that third tipover line across the rear is less significant than the other two, it is convenient for the S/TEP program, since it is very relevant to the trikes in the course.

It also helps discussing steering issues on steep uphills. I have experienced the rear tipover line when I accidently popped a wheely with my first sidecar rig, a /2~ Ural combo of all things- dumped the clutch going uphill from a stop sign.

Gotta go back out to the shop-later guys!

This thread and the earlier parallel one has been the most interesting reading on these boards for some time. You guys all provide excellent points for thought. Reminds of a buddy's old talk show from the eighties. When he had guests and callers who were in total agreement on the subject matter at hand, it was milk toast boring. When he had guests and callers with varing or opposing view points it made for a very interesting show!

Yes, and just last year, in Tasmania, Australia, a very stupid Dad with his pre-teen age son clinging on the back of a 4-wheel ATV going up a steep hill did fall over backwards, killing the son. What is even worse, the Chief of Police, who should have known better, publicly stated that that incident would not have happened if only the stupid dad had gone to a 2-wheel motorcycle awareness school. What a bunch of dummies! The blind leading the blind. We are in real deep sh1t. Like you send a pilot to a gryo school to learn how to fly a Jumbo jet! Thank goodness we have folks like yourself who question what they have a concern with. Not a shame to question. Ignorance is only when we do not question.
