The data is NOT outdated. It is from the 2006 Tire & Rim Association Specifications. They issue notifications whenever the data changes.
Please supply ANY evidence WHY you think the data has suddenly changed?
Provide any NEW data that shows that auto rim sizes and MC rim sizes in the 15 inch size are the same for the 15" size. They never have been. Just when do you think this change took place? Which tires? Which brands? None that I know about.
Yesterday I talked to several tire installers who told me they had not.
Just supply us with the name and contact of your installer so we may get in contact with him regarding your installation. Did he exceed the maximum pressure as advised by the manufacturer? Did he even use a pressure gage? Or did he just blow it up until the beads pop? That is what most do. WOOSH - bang! ooPS. Say, Joe, see if we have another tire in that style?
Ride safe
Hal,
I think the installer would not remember the installation specifics of my rig. He would think that I was a nut to have someone call regarding it.
To settle this matter.
I spoke to a fellow that is more experienced than us regarding the use of 15" car tires. He did say there is a bit more danger during installation on a 15" rim. However, if a cage is used the danger is minimized to no more than any other installation. Once installed the risks are the same as any other tire.
Hopefully, this puts this matter to rest. Bottom line is if proper installation techniques are used the use of a car tire on a 15" rim is an accepted practice.
Mike
Again - you are missing the entire point.
The auto tire is mismatched by about 1/8 inch smaller than the M/C tire in the 15 inch tire - which is not so in any other tire size.
This deliberate stretching of the steel wires as it goes over into place on to rim is what tears the tire apart in this size. You, and a few others have been exceptionally LUCKY. It did not explode during fitment.
The tire installers were apparantly totally ignorant of the situation - else they would never have allowed this to be done. Again, what pressures were used?
So far, all tire installers we have contacted, both auto and sidecar, are 100 percent opposed to this practice.
WE HAVE YET TO HEAR FROM A SINGLE TIRE INSTALLER, WHO IS AWARE OF THE FACTS , WHO IS ON YOUR SIDE. PRODUCE HIM
Safe riding
Why do some people think they have to save the world??
Hal,
We can agree that there is a significant difference of opinion.
I am going riding!
Mike
Whew - guess we should change the subject to .... oh let's see something noncontroversial .... how about politics 😉

How can you tell when a politician is lying?
Just watch his lips.
If they move then he is lying!
Seriously, a few years ago a Senator for PA was attending a MSF International Safety Meeting where I was scheduled to present a paper on sidecar safety and training methodology. Believing he was "among friends" the good senator proceeded to describe a proposal to create a national task force to "go after" the "bad motorcyclists" like the "Hells Angell's type of gangs" that were allegedly responsible for most of the rapes in the US, the illicit drug traffic, the porn, sale of babies, and most of the illegal baccy and booze sales in the US according to him. Well - they just barely got him outa there alive and in one piece. Closest thing I ever got to see a honest to goodness live lynching. And this was the reaction from the "best" of the bikers. The proposal was never enacted - but that damned politician is still alive and in PA, the bloodsucker. What beats me is why he ever expected to get us to support his stupid proposal in the first place. He was expecting to create a 10,000 dedicated army to just go after bad bikers. If they could not find enough BAD bikers then the standards would be lowered. Soon they would be going after a not so bad biker, and finally, any biker who just spit on the sidewalk in the desert. Enough already.
Can't recall his name. Dumpy little guy w/ glasses.

Nawwww, I've been booted from too many forums for expressing my LIBERAL views! You know, positions like on global warming, the WAR, the economy, the national debt, the loss of freedoms, gerrymandering, lack of trust, secrecy, stolen elections, competence, science and math education, stem cell research, etc., etc. Hey, what can I say? I'm not a one-issue guy 😉 Smile if you can!
I'll just keep quiet here and chat on other (more appropriate) forums).
Now, let me tell you about putting tractor tires on my Suzi ....
Sidecar Ron
Speaking of tractor tires, no doubt you are aware that the front wheels of the Fordson Tractor, the 15 inch wheels, are precisely suitable to build up into a heavy duty low cost rear wheel for a sidecar rig. Again, there are photos and a lead article on same in an edition of the Sidecarist. Our good budy, Bob Bolton of Texas built it up. Takes any width 15 inch auto tire safely. There are many ways to fit a 15 inch auto tire safely into a sidecar rig. Just think outside the box.
There are other tractors, Fegerson, others that also have 15 inch front wheels. Just Google and a whole other world opens up. Look for older tractors and antique tractors. Major markets. Cheap. Requires just some simple adaptors and simple machining.
Hal,
I have an idea. Just put a 15" car tire on the motorcycle rim. Seems like a out of the box type of idea! The only issue is that in 1971 the now de-funk Winston Tire suggested in a round about way that the tire was for car use only.
Mike

I agree, Ron,
I just had a fellow sidecarist refuse to sell me some Valkyr1e parts because I have a picture of Ronald Reagon on my website.
Does not compute. The ID of the 15 inch car tire is not compatible with the OD of the 15 inch MC rim, not in 1971, and not in 2006. Nothing has changed. Winston Tires, one of the largest tire retailers, went bankrupt in 2002. However, it was not them who suggested that the 15 inch tire was for auto use only. It was the Tire and Rim Association who makes all the rules for the world and these rules govern ALL tire manufacturers world wide - ie - in ALL countries - the US and Europe, etc. Also, all rim manufacturers. That is why everyone is in lock step - both rim and tire manufacturers, otherwise you would have total anarchy. Any problems should be directed to the source - the Tire and Rim Association. Makes little difference what you or I think or believe. Nothingt will change that. Only the Tire & Rim Association can change that. And I do not think they will. You may try.
