Greetings. My research regarding motos which might work well for sidecars continues. My goal is to have a long-distance touring rig which will transport me from Sacramento, California to Colorado, where my daughter will be attending university next year, in reasonable comfort AND which will also work well for local and state jaunts.

I'm currently looking at two bikes here locally which are in good condition and which might be very good as sidecar tugs. They include a 1992 BMW R100R airhead ( ) and a 2001 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Drifter ( http://www.powersportsnetwork.com/enthusiasts/review_list_vehicle.asp?veh=1824).

I think that either of these bikes would work well with a Ural sidecar, although I understand that they are very different in terms of performance and capability. Interestingly, the Drifter looks like it has frame lugs on the right side of the frame which might work well for a place to anchor the sidecar frame.

Another alternative, of course, is to buy a rig which is already set up and running. I'm looking at the GL1100/Velorex 700 rig that Lonnie is advertising elsewhere on this site. That looks like a great rig and is priced well, in my never to be humble opinion, but I expect that it will be gone before I'm actually ready to buy.

Anyway, I'd greatly appreciate any information anyone has about sidecar installations using either the BMW or Kawasaki I've described above...ease of set up, type of sidecar, performance on surface roads and interstates, any other pearls of wisdom you'd care to share.

Thanks in advance for ALL responses...as a newby, I soak up everything I read here...it's really a valuable resource and there are a lot of smart people here.

Bob

Here are some candid comments:
First off is that Either one will work well.
Each shoudl have a subframe.
Forward controls can be a challenge as far as mounting goes in some cases.
BMW will be an easier car tire conversion if you ever decide to go that way.
BMW will look better with a leading link if aesthetics are an issue related to biek styles.
Cruisers look great with Urals especially if sidecar is lowered.
Either wil do okay on the road.
If you like the cruiser look go that route. If you liek BMW's go thjat route.

I'm with Claude that both would make suitable rigs.

I'd suggest that you first should decide if you are most comfortable riding a sport, standard or cruiser style bike, then shop among your choices in that style of bike.

Advice By Tod, a diehard bmw airhead standard bike kinda guy.
