Bonneville on a Hack?

Strange things happen with sidecars, as we all know. Today, as I rode up to my Cabin with the new V Strom, my neighbor (3 houses down) came over to look at both it and the Ural Retro. He's about 70 years old, real nice guy. Don't know him well, but have talked before. Seemed knowledgeable about motorcycles.

After a few minutes of listening to his comments and observations it became clear he knew way more than me about SCs. When I asked him, he said he had raced SCs throughout Europe and the US since the 60s. In fact, he was planning on returning to Bonneville this year, hoping to top 200 mph with his turbocharged Busa powered hack!!!

SAY WHAT!!

He invites me to come along, says there is a "run what you brung class" maybe try my Suzuki track bike "just for grins".

I'm getting more and more enthused, this is too cool to be real.

So, after he leaves, I "google" Bob Bakker and Bonneville(I'm from Kansas)

He has a pretty impresive history of SC racing. Even found references to his upcoming attempt.

Can't wait for September.

Sounds like an interesting neighbor - good luck to him in September.

Do you plan to take your VSTROM/URAL off road much. If so, let us know how it performs - pluses and minuses.

I do plan t take the Strom off road, bigest issues are the rear tire and gearing. The current rear is an ME880 (for mileage) plus the gearing is too tall.

I plan to purchase a tire changer so i can more easily swap tires, gearing is also pretty easy.

I may be wrong, but it might be more cost effective to buy extra rims. Then you don't take a chance of tearing a bead mounting and dismounting.
