best bike for a Velorex
Good day, I'm looking for some feedback on what people think is the best bike for a Velorex hack? Also, I don't want to incorporate a sub-frame; I've had 2 rigs without the support and put on over 18k with zero problems. Now, I'm not saying there not necessary, just that I don't want to use one. I have a 562 from the 80's? Thanks for the feedback, Aldo
The best is in the eye of the beholder. I have a 565 on a Honda Shadow 1100 and it works for me. No sub frame needed.
I have the 562 with its original 350 Jawa 2 stroker...
only good in cold flat lands and extremely economical, but a no no for high mountain range like where I live.

I'd also vote for a Shadow, maybe a 70's vintage Moto Guzzi, or an older Sportster (pre rubber mount to avoid subframe). Others will disagree, but I would never mount one on anything larger.
Preferably something under 1100cc's unless the suspension has been upgraded. The '80's models were designed for 350cc to 500cc bikes and had suspension to match. The suspension will collapse in left turns and have a tendency to "wallow" with a heavy bike.
This can be eliminated with a bolt on retrofit for the weak suspension.
(I just happen to be a vendor for this upgrade.)

I have a highly modified 1974 560 mounted to a 1960 Greeves Scottish/Hawkstone 250.
Seems to be just right.... a vintage adventure rider.
Great fun!

Any year Bonneville, Kawasaki W650, Honda 550 or 750 fours from the 70's/early 80's, older Guzzi in the 750 850 range, 883 Sportster. That's all I can think of right now...
Take a look in some of my albums. Hack'n's Hacks
Here's 2 I have for sale at present.

Haven't seen anyone mention a BMW R75. I have an '86 562 mounted to the '71 beemer and am enjoying it immensely. If I could find a real stiff shock to fit the hack I think I would enjoy it more.
Lonnie, thats a mighty fine looking outfit with the savage!
Those Savage Thumpers make a great little tug.

The earlier (pre Cruiser) Velos were still using the same suspension that the lightweight 350cc and 500cc Jawas used. The placement of the shock between the axle and it's pivot made for a nice soft suspension on the Jawa but make for a wallowing, bottoming suspension when used with the heavier bikes.
We have a direct bolt on retrofit suspension kit that replaces the 15mm axle setup with a 1" axle and better geometry for use on heavy bike combos and dual sport work. It makes a world of difference in the handling.

Hello Lonnie,
what I have to spend on this conversion kit for to ease my nerves...
I could wind up easily only to 20mm axle myself and 25mm sounds way better to me, plus stronger suspension...sounds very good.
And some more longer suspension stroke would be fine on tropical mud tracks too.
You know my driving style and these mointains call for a new work horse. Jawa doesn't want me to marry their 650 to my old 562 sidecar, so I am on my search.and you give me a good option.
Best regards
Sven Peter
