airhead crank wieghts
I just got a '79 R100RT to put on my Velorex 700 sidecar, removing the '78 R100S with Windjammer. RT fairing matches better stylewise and will have less wind resistance...trouble is....the RT engine spun a rod shell and the rod journals on the crank have to be turned down and re-fit oversized. The rods will have to be re-ground also to fit the ovesized shells...66K..oil pump is out of spec too.
Question...what is correct procedure for removing the balance weights from the crank so that the machinist can turn the journals? Haynes does not address that, but the clearance specs are listed. I searched web for shop manual but have found notng useful yet. What do y'all out there in etherit land have that might help?.....other than take to BMW shop.
The weights are held to the crank lobes with 3 dowels. Can I just tap them out with a drift? I am afraid that I may knock the crank out of lign,
or something. Putting the weights back will also be a challenge, I think.
Whatcha got?

Probably a little too technical and airhead specific for this list to get a solid answer. If it was my bike, I would swap out the short block, or buy a good crank. I have bought several low mileage bottom ends for around $100. They are what is usually left after a bike is parted out and there is little demand for them. I've done this before as it is far less technical and also less expensive then regrinding a crank.
There are several regulars at boxerworks.com who will know the procedures you are asking about. Try posting there.
If you are a member of the Airhead Beemer Club you can ask Oak, the airmail tech editor, who will know the exact procedure for your repair.
