1975 FLH, 1972 hack frame, 1982 tub
I've been going through the forums and there seems to be a difference of opinion, so I thought I'd ask.
A forum member has a 1972 hack frame with a 1982 tub, and I'd like to buy it and stick it on my 1975 FLH with square-tube swingarm.
Some of the posts I find seem to think that frame would work, some don't. None address mating the '82 tub on the '72 frame, though. I wouldn't think that'd be a big deal, but this'll be my first hack, so I guess I should make sure.
Anyone have any idea?
Thanks.

1. Does your 1975 frame have two 3/8-16 threaded bolt holes on the right side behind the oil tank to hold the passenger foot rest....or just one boss? Do you have a square tube swingarm at the present on your 1975 FLH or does it have the round tube. IIRC the round tube was earlier. Or are you saying that you already have the square tube version. Could you give us a picture of the motorcycle frame in that area?
2. Could you give some pictures of the rear section of the hack frame at the extreme left rear where the mount attaches so that we can see which version of frame you have? I know what a 1982 frame looks like but I want to see exactly what you have.
3. The upper front and lower front mounts will fit, assuming that you have all of the parts. If you do not change the fork trail, I suggest that you add a steering damper. A VW unit from a late 60's/early 70's bug will work and you can make the brackets. (early sidecars didn't have the steering damper.)
If I can see pictures, I could be helpful.

I can definitely get pictures of my bike. The square-tube swingarm is on there now. The hack frame, I'll have to ask the seller. I haven't bought it yet.
Thanks.

OK, when you get the pictures, go ahead and post them and we can take it from there. I want to verify the configuration of your frame since IIRC 1978-1/2 was the change point where Harley went to a mount that bolted to the right side passenger footpag mount. Prior to that, they used a square pad that bolted to the swing arm ahead of the brake caliper. The rear frame on the hack was longer and the hack mount was rearward about a foot.
Just prior to that, there was a period in the 70's where they were using the earlier long-frame hacks that had been used as far back as knuckleheads, on the Shovelheads. Those were mounted to the rigid frame. Same Hack, different mount. In the late 50''s to early 60's they changed from metal tubs to fiberglass.
Pictures will tell the tale and then we can adise you. Also, when you examine the Hack, see if all of the mounts are there since they are getting harder and harder to find.
To be continued.
🙂
the adjustable raked trees and tree parts ARE available for a 75 frame.

Here's the pic of the frame I have so far. I'm not even sure which end it is, but it's what I have so far. I'll post pics of the bike tomorrow when I can get some in the sun.

That's the lower front mount. We need more pictures of the rear end of the frame opposite the portion showing in the picture.
Okay, got the pictures. Sorry about my arm in the pics of my bike, I was trying to block the glare off the chrome. The first two are the rear mount pictures from the seller, the last three are of my bike's rear passenger footpeg mount.
I can hardly tell about the configuration of the frame from the extreme closeup nature of the picture. If I had to guess, the frame appears to be OK but I wouild need a shot of the whole rear of the frame to be certain.
The bike frame is good. It has the two bolt pad with 3/8-16" holes so you are good to go there if you can locate the 1980's HD mount with two holes and a large threaded coupling.
That threaded coupling mates with the part of the frame shown in picture two, but as I say, I'm guessing since I can't see the overall frame.
Good luck.
