I'm a man of little wealth and poor taste 😀

With that out of the way (and no apologies to the Stones), Howdy all Y'all from Texas.  As mentioned on a different thread, I have an '03 Valkyrie that would make a good tug. Six cylinder, 100HP etc.  Six carbs and lousy gas mileage to boot!

But I also have a a 2022 Royal Enfield Classic 350 that I would really like to add a hack to. I know the Valk has 5x the HP and 4x the torque but that's a bike I like to ride solo and take medium length trips on, e.g. I ride it to work, an 80 mile round trip. I'd prefer to not hook up a sidecar to it.  Also, the Valk, even with stock pipes, is loud.  I'm afraid my passenger in the hack will get severe hearing damage.

I'd like a sidecar to take short trips around the Texas Hill Country back roads with wifey.   Two lane, mostly quiet Farm to Market roads, trips into Blanco or Wimberley for coffee & donuts!  20-40 mile trips at 35-50 mph?  I realize the Enfield is probably underpowered and maybe my sanity should be questioned.

This guy added a Cozy Euro:

He didn't care for the handling and some of the comments question the lack of power.

Here's a chap that added a Watsonian:

and he seems to think it's capable?   From the Watsonian website, the Manx or Prescott are good choices.

I've considered buying a complete rig but space is tight in the garage.  I need to sell some toys!

Anyway, I'm open to feedback from the experts.  I'm totally new to the sidecar scene and just spitballin' at this stage.

Thanks!

Somehow I'm no expert and they elected me president.  Go figure! Razz

In Donie, Texas is an organization that would be idealto contact for ideas with your RE.  They do make a fairly compact car that's light weight and narrow, two distinct advantages of a small displacement bike.  I do agree that the Valkyries exhaust is enthusiastic and if you've got a bike you enjoy two wheeled, make something else work if necessary.

Have you seen the series Death in Paradise?  It's set in the Carribean and the law enforcement has two vehicles - a Land Rover and an RE with sidecar.  Not sure what brand but it is somewhat amusing to see the constabulary traveling together in that!

Keep asking questions and you will be able to include links after your next post.

@road-scholar-1841 I must concur with our association president, not solely because he is THEE president, but because I like his wife and his dog Maddie much more than I like him, so I have to agree with him periodically.

TSC/DMC is YOUR go to source. That is Texas Sidecar Company in Donie, Texas, and the owner, Kent Silk is quite knowledgeable about what you need for a sidecar attached to that Royal Enfield.

You will not be the first, nor the last, that attaches a sidecar to a Royal Enfield, and from what I have seen, that bike does quite well with a sidecar attached to it.

Contact Kent Silk at TSC/DMC in Donie, Texas, and he will take care of you.

Thank you both.  I have seen the bike / hack in Death in Paradise!

According to Google:  The Royal Enfield featured in Death in Paradise is a Bullet 500, often paired with a Watsonian Grand Prix sidecar mounted on the right side. This iconic motorcycle is a staple of the show, used frequently by the police officers on the fictional Caribbean island.

@road-scholar-1841 ..... But Wait....there's more....

Given that you are new to driving a sidecar, and most of us will tell you to Test The Waters first, before building a sidecar rig, as it is usually less expensive to BUY an already completed sidecar rig, than it is to build a rig, even if you already own the bike....

YOU HAVE OPTIONS....

Remember, I have promoted TSC/DMC, and believe that Kent Silk will take care of you...

That being said, right NOW there is a complete sidecar rig that is for sale, directly north of you, in the very teeny weeny town of Buffalo, Kansas, and it is a Road Rady and Road Proven rig, that will cost you a LOT less money than buying a sidecar from TSC/DMC, because....by the time you order a sidecar to be made by TSC/DMC in Donie, Texas, then have them paint it to match your Royal Enfield, then have them attach it to your bike....when all is said and done, and ALL-IN...you will be spending very close to $ 12,000.00, or more.

The alternative is: https://sidecar.com/forum/complete-rigs-for-sale/for-sale-1995-gl1500se-with-california-friendship-sidecar/

This is a 1995 Honda Goldwing 1500 SE, with a Champion Escort ll sidecar, and it is truly Road Ready and Road Proven.

4280 3135 Untitled 1

It is on a February special pricing right now, as the seller has lowered the price to $ 8,500.....and I am throwing another $ 500.00 into the pot, which means that YOU will only pay the seller $ 8,000.00 for this very complete rig.

Remember...this is a FEBRUARY special price, and the price goes back UP as of march 1st.

$ 8,000.00 for a Road Ready and Road Proven very complete rig, versus spending in excess of $ 12,000.00 to have a sidecar built and attached to your Royal Enfield.

The clue to being smart here is....Test the Waters with this 1995 Wing and Champion Escort ll....if you hate sidecar driving, sell that rig for the same amount you paid for it, because by then Summer will be here, and the price for it goes UP in the Summer....it's like buying a Jet Ski in the Winter for less money, then reselling it in the Summer for more money.

You already know the engine on this 1995 Goldwing 1500, as it is the same "engine" that is in your 2003 Valkyrie, but has less carbs, and even with a sidecar attached to this bike, it gets the same fuel mileage out of it as your solo Valkyrie gets.

THINK.....Mr. Road Scholar....THINK about the wisdom of doing it this way.

If you LOVE sidecar driving, and still want to add a sidecar to your Royal Enfield, then order a new sidecar from TSC/DMC this coming Fall, receive it this next Winter, then sell this Goldwing rig to recoup your original investment.

That's all I have to say about that Shut Mouth

@road-scholar-1841 For the genuine Triviistas (did I just make up a word?) the original constable (Dwayne Myers) is played by Danny John-Jules.  The obscure trivia point is that Danny John-Jules portrayed Cat in the 80s Sci-Comedy Red Dwarf.

Did not know that.  I like the seasons (6-9) that had Ardal O'Hanlon (Dougal from Rather Ted!) as the Detective.

Another good detective series is The Brokenwood Mysteries, set in New Zealand.

Thank you.  I did see that rig in KS listed and I considered it.  A few things that are giving me pause (not paws): location (600+ miles north) age of bike & miles, more carbs (prefer FI), asking price; and lastly, my space at the moment is somewhat limited.  I have a small "shop" that I've jammed 3 vehicles and 3 motorbikes into.  It's tight!  I need to downsize but it's like Sophie's Choice!

I agree with your logic though.  A complete rig makes sense.   Buy something that's used and well put together and costs significantly less than a new hack and see how it goes.  There's a guy in one of our MC clubs that has a BMW rig and doesn't ride anymore, so I need to have a conversation with him.

Those are LeatherLyke saddlebag on your Valkyrie.

Do NOT be concerned...at all....about the miles on that 1995 Wing. Unlike the Valkyrie engine, the Wing engine is good for 500,000 miles, if properly maintained.

And I personally know the current owner,  and the previous owner,  and I will attest to the fact that this '95 Wing has been properly maintained,  cared for, mechanically sound and solid. It has the right tires, all around,  a new OEM alternator,  a Firecreek Accessories Windshield,  recently installed trail reducing triple trees,  and everything works.

Or....buy that BMW....and spend the same amount again repairing things, and making things right.

Or...have TSC/DMC build and install a new sidecar for your Royal Enfield....at 50 % more cost that the 1995 Wing rig.

Life is about choices.

Correct, good eye, those are LeatherLykes.  Their HQ used to be just down the road from me in Bulverde but they are no longer in business.

You are right, if well maintained, the flat four and flat six boxers run forever.  There's a guy well known in Valkyrie circles that has 800K on his '99 Valk, original engine & transmission.

If that '95 Wing was a bit closer I'd definitely check it out.
