Hi: I have a 2005 Triumph T100 with a Ural sidecar. It's going to get a new tire prior to the meet in Vt. this July. Is it a good idea to change to a one fewer tooth, rear sprocket when the tire gets changed? I aleady have the sprocket. By the way, I only get about 30mpg. Will the sprocket change improve mileage? Thanks, Larry

Smaller rear sprocket on the rear gears it up but one tooth is not going to make a whole lot of difference. Normally one tooth on the counter sprocket is like 2 or 3 on the rear sprocket. 30mpg with a sidecar does not seem all that bad from what I have read. I have a old 1971 T100 C Triumph.

My 72 flh with hd sidecar that I had I installed a larger sprocket on it for highway use and I got about 35 mpg with that setup, the down side is you down shift more or run in lower gears a bit more now my 01 roadglide cal3 rig is stock and I get around 45 mpg.

Where about are you coming from to the Vermont rally?

What side car are you running on your 01 road glide? What speeds do you cruise? On my 02 ultra with out a sidecar I get 42mpg if I stay 65 or below and if I run 70 to 80 I only get 38mpg.

On your 72 FLH you must have changed your transmission sprocket as a 1972 had rear drum brakes and you could not change the rear sprocket so I am guessing this is why you said larger. IF you got 35mpg on it particularly with a sidecar you did damn good.

I have a California friendship 3 it's a double wide sidecar depends on the roads and conditions but generally 65 on highway anything above and it drops like a hot rock. roadglide is going on 68000 miles. The 72 had a mild cam for highway crusing as for the rear drum I gutted the rear end and installed a dics on the rear the sidecar didn't have brakes and I didn't like the lack of stoping power. After instaling the disc set up and when I would apply the brakes to stop I would turn slightly towards the sidecar.

A good friend and I went riding the other day he has a 05 FLHT with about 20k and I was on my 02 ultra with 80k. He was telling me he gets 48MPG under 65. When we filled up after riding a tank out come to find you his speedometer said we went a whole lot further then what mine said. LOL I have checked mine with the mile markers and is pretty close. When I put by Baker DD6 in I am going to try to barrow a GPS to set the speedometer.

Getting 45 with a rig much less a big rig running 65 or under you are doing really well and better then the others I talk to. When I put my little HD sidecar on mine and if I get 35mpg 65 and under I will be happy.

I get 35-38 mpg with my Ultra and TLE sidecar. I dropped the gearing to a lower ration, 3.37:1. When it was solo, it got 42 mpg with 3.15:1 gearing.

If you remove a tooth from the rear spricket, I would be concerned about hill-pulling ability. It's also not a foregone conclusion that higher gearing (smaller rear sprocket) will automatically give better fuel mileage. Each engine has a sweel spot and if you are running lower or higher rpm than that speed, mileage may be affected at road speed.

My 72 I also installed a larger sprocket on the rear with I believe 3 more teeth that was the reason for more down shifting at lower speeds. Now the roadglide like I said earlier is stock, I have also checked it with mile markers to and it is pretty darn close now keep in mind I am talking highway traveling when in the city the stop and go or a head wind it drop's fast. I don't beat on the rig it cost to damn much to abuse ,I have also traveled 75 to 80 mph with 3 heading home in New Brunswick Canada, and didn't bother to check it the constant stopping to refill told me all I needed to know in regards to my mileage LOL

If you put a bigger sprocket on the rear this makes the gearing lower more RPM in high gear. To get a higher gear the rear sprocket has to be less teeth or the transmission sprocket more teeth.

Chuck: We'll be coming from S.E. Pa.; West Chester. By the way, where do we send the registration fee? I e-mailed the treasurer weeks ago and never got an answer. Thanks for your response to the sprocket question. Looks like I'll leave well enough alone. Thanks, Larry

If you have time post some pictures of your T100 with the sidecar. I was born on 1214 Macon Ave. Pittsburgh PA and in 1968 moved to Macon, GA. at the age of 14 LOL. I am guessing you will come right through the city I live in if you are taking I 75. If you would like I can PM you my phone number in case you have a problem or if you just want to have a cup of coffee.

Hi Larry,

The Registration fee comes to me, e-mail me at @sidecar.com">ne_director@sidecar.com I will send you my address. I was down in your neck of the woods last week from thursday till sartuday at the AMCA meet in Oley Pa.

As for the sprocket and gearing I personally believe each set up will operate a little differently I installed a larger sprocket on the rear tire due to the motor gear that was on the bike and then we chose a cam to go with the combination .

Heres another thing to consider with different set ups,my 72 flh was toed in at 5/8 " I generally got 7500 miles per rear tire once I got close to 9000 BUT there was nothing left of it when it got changed out. Now my 01 roadglide is toed in at 1/4" larger sidecar on it and pushing it I can get 6500 miles per rear tire but with 5/8" toe in on the roadglide and it shreads the tire in 3000 or less.

Chuck: Small world! The Oley meet is put on by my local AMCA club, The Perkiomen Chapter. If you were there Friday or Saturday, I may have extorted money from you for a "parking donation." Let me know your address for the registration fee. I'll leave the sproket alone; however I did get a new heavier duty Metzler tire and just ordered a new sealed chain. Thanks, Larry
