Sidecar Mounting on a Lowered HD

I have an '03 Ultra and am getting ready to mount an '03 Standard Harley Sidecar on it. I had the bike lowered using HD low profile shocks and the lowering kit for the front forks due to being "vertically challenged". The HD dealer told me that I would have to put the original equipment back on the bike before mounting the car. Is that true, or is he just trying to take some more of my social security check? Thanks.

Have you checked with Phil Hryczaniuk at Waugh's H-D 800.88.WAUGH in Orange? He is THE EXPERT. That is also THE PLACE to have your H-D Hack set up.
Once you have the Hack permanently installed, your challenge will go away.
If Phil says Stock, then problem solved.
The only thing that would effect the set up in my own opinion would be the front mount will be a little lower to the ground. that be the case, the more you lower the nose of the Tub to at least level(front to rear), the better the air dynamics.
Good Luck & Happy Hack'n

Thanks Wiskers,
I checked with Waugh's and Phil is no longer with them. However, the tech who taught Phil IS still there and will be installing my sidecar when it comes in. Yes, the suspension must be put back to original so that everything aligns correctly. They even found some original take-offs that they are throwing in also.

Your Welcome, Lloyd
Picked up 2000 H-D setup at local dealer 3/01. From the gate the Hack wasn't set up right. The Tech, that was suppose to set it up, was out of town. "LOL" When he got back, and after several attempts to get it right, went to the dealer. Asked if I had an evaluation done at Waugh's, if he would make it right, Yes. On our way to the Hack'd Invitational,WV we had the evaluation by Phil & Bruce. Ask him how much gear that we had to unload, including Ginger(dog). Upon returning home made an appointment with dealer, with list in hand. LOL $385 to make it right?? NOT
H-D Sidecar Qualified Tech?: Video Tape or 10 Day H-D Sidecar Course
Ask Hoss about his $1000 rear tire, fellow dealer.
Since then, I do all my adjustments.
To the left is what I have replaced the U-Bolts with on the Rear Mounting Assembly.

I think the techs at Waugh's know what they're doing in most cases. Thay've always done me right. Hoss and a few others just made a 3500+ mile trip (Key West, Fla. panhandle, New Orleans, etc.). Visited him yesterday and he told ma all about it. Also, he's going to try mine out when they get it installed. I figure that since he's been riding one for 100 years, he should know if it's right. I'll ask him about the tire.

Anyone wishing info on the Modified H-D Rear Mounting Assembly pictured at the left may e-mail me directly. wskrs@adelphia.net

Otherwise, I may have to use the old Chinese proverb.

Be Wise 1/2 of proverb in here somewheres: http://www.sidecar.com/megabbs/thread-view.asp?threadid=905&posts=5

Thank you for your interest, you won't be disappointed.

Yes it is true. I tried to mount my hd sidecar with a lowering kit on the rear and I couldn't get the top front mount to slide in properly. I removed the lowering kit and it slide together perfectly. Being vertically challenged is of no consequence with a sidecar rig. Remember, this sidecar is a rigid mount and there is little flexibility. Enjoy your ride.

I have a 2003 Ultra with the low profle shocks in the rear. My dealer put the sidecar on without requiring the original equipment. I have only had it for a couple of months so I really don't know if it has any effect or not. The only problem I've had so far is having to re-adjust the the u-bolts after they slipped. I am definitly interested in more data.

Tjey mounted my sidecar a couple of weeks ago, but had to put the original equipment rear shocks and fork springs back on beforehand. Lucky I still had the old ones and they didn't charge me for changing them. They told me that with the lowered bike, things would be in a terrific strain. Don't know where you live, but if you're close enough to Orange, Virginia, you might want to let Waugh HD look at it or talk to them. You can call them toll free at 1-800-88WAUGH (Talk to Bruce). I too am worried about the weak looking u-bolts and would like to get something made like Wiskers (see the pic on his posts). Thanks for the reply.

I'm only a couple of hours north of Waugh's, Round Hill, VA. I have heard they are good with sidecars. I have had problems with my sidecar fender. My dealer had to put a spoked wheel on instead of the cast one because the fender was up agaisnt the wheel. They even ordered a new fendeer, but the same thing happened. I may have to make a trip to Waugh's and see what they can do for me. Thanks.

Glad you are close enough to check with them. I even met a rider from Maine on the road a while back who told me that he thought Waugh's was the best shop around to set up a sidecar. We live in Powhatan (about 60 miles south of Orange and closer to Richmond HD, but the drive up there is worth it. Let me know if you're ever coming this way and maybe we can meet up for a ride.

John
When I went to Waugh's, they told me that they use the old Body English to align the sidecar fender. My dealer also said that they needed to order a new fender. Well they had to anyway, because they had used the strut to mount a spot light on. I told them that, that was not acceptable.
The reason that the U-Bolts slip is that they fail to run the set screws in a little before they tighten the U-Bolts. It is almost impossible to set them with an Allen Wrench. The 1 1/2" tubing used now seems to be thinner, and the U-Bolts will bite into it.
Happy Hack'n

I have a 95 HD sidecar mounted on a lowered front and rear 95 FLHTC and it handles and rides great. I use 3/4 toe in with 1 degree leanout. Rides straight as an arrow with no wobble at all. The front is lowered 1 1/2" via progressive springs and the rear is lowered using both White Bros lowering braket and low profile HD shocks. The rear sits a tad lower than the front thus making it steer a lot more easier then before installing the lower shocks.

I have a 75 FL with a lowered rear. I am getting ready to hook it up to a 79 cle. Am I going to have to get a pair of stock shocks for it? I've never set up a rig before. This is going to be a learning experience for me. Thanks, Chuck
