A lot of new riders out there and if they don't know better and have a Yamaha and go to there owner manual. This is what thay will fine. From the owner manual of a 2003 Vstar 1100.

1st to 2nd 20 12.4 2nd to 3rd 30 18.6 3rd to 4th 40 24.9
4th to 5th 50 31.1

Yes, my 1993 Shadow VT-1100 (4 speed) manual was similar. It had recommended speeds for shifting points that were extremely low. On my Harley I always keep it at 2,000 rom or greater in any gear to prevent lugging. It's especially bad on any motorcycle to lug th engine. It can damage the crank and driveline parts.
