Hi all, I'm new here. I'm interested in a Harley sidecar for my '07 Road King. What years will fit? What are the differences? Can I use an older sidecar and the newer mounts? If this has been covered in the forums before maybe someone can provide a link. Thanks a bunch.

You may want to go to your dealer and have them look or ask if you can look in the sidecar service manual. The manual I have has a chart but only goes to 2005.

OK I'll cover this quick and nasty I know for sure you can go back as far as 1993 and get the 2007 mounting hardware kit.and it will mount up without a big deal.
I will also tell you that gets it installed and rest is how handy you are with the electrical and the little things like the right saddle bag lid so you can open easy without hitting the sidecar.

When I put one on my ultra 2007 there was a couple of guys on this site that were very very helpfull they gave me part numbers and all that I would need to do the installation .I picked and choose what information I wanted to use.I made all my wire harnesses and didn't worry about the saddle bag lid or the lean angle I didn't use.I did hook up the brake and it worked great. In the 2007 mount kit has things you can't do without.the rear brake master cyl.change over kit oil preasure relocation hardware and clutch cable it is longer the directions in this kit are great .

I went and looked one of the people was a great help that was gnm109 all the info he gave me was right on.and he didn't add a lot of useless this direct and to the point.
Do not plan on a lot of help from your dealer only because that most dealers just don't get involed much .And some of these guys read everything about the sidecars.OK I've rambled on enough.Good luck

Thanks for the replys. I also have a '74 FLH and may just hunt down a sidecar for it. Looks like that may be the easier way to go for the first time although I think the '07 would pull one better.

the 74 will only go about 60 reliably, the 07 96" will cruise at 80 all day fully loaded.

on the 74 you can install a 3speed with reverse factory trans [if you can find one] and even factory hand shift foot clutch..

on the 74 you can install factory raked trees [if you can find them] that can be adjusted for sidecar or solo.

on the 07 there are two brands of raked trees - and they are NOT adjustable - sidecar or bike ONLY.

on the 74 they changed gearing for sidecar use - some years had a smaller engine sprocket and some had a smaller trans sprocket

so first decide what you are using it for and where you intend to ride it and that will make your choice for you, if its keeping up on the interstates use the 07, if its tooling along 2 lane no shoulder secondary country roads the 74 will work just fine.

The 74 FLH would be underpowered quite a bit. As Timo* says, it would only be good for slower rides.

I have a 2004 88" bike and it pulls the sidecar just fine at freeway speeds. Anything less and you are limited.

I fumble fingered when I typed, it's a '76 FLH but they're about the same thing. It's been my solo ride for around 15 years but it seems underpowered for even that compared to the '07. The Road King is like a spaceship compared to the old bike. I live in an area with lots of hilly twisty roads. I geared the '76 up a couple of years ago in an attempt to make 2nd and 3rd gears more useful. It helped a bit there but oddly it seems to have lost a little top end in 4th. I guess there just isn't enough torque to pull the taller gear. Gearing it back down and pulling a sidecar at slower speeds doesn't sound too bad, kind of relaxing. It would be for local rides anyway. The older sidecars seem more plentiful and affordable which is a bit of an issue right now. Sometimes I feel like I'm making payments on a spaceship.

I have an 07 witha an 04 sidecar no problems. When it comes to pulling I can maintain about 80 on the interstate in 6th but to go faster or to have passing power I have to downshift to fifth.

Turns and curves seem to limit my speed, much more than anything else. The best advice I have gotten so far was to obey the speed signs on the curves. My car lifts a bit if I try to push the limit. It helps to have some ballast in it while running without a passanger. have fun Sidecars are a whole new trip.
