Harley Oil filter relocation kit
The mounts for my Liberty sidecar are right in the way of getting the Harley Road King Oil filter out. This requires alot of unbolting and bolting to do the oil change on this bike. I was wondering if anyone knew of a relocation kit to take care of this prob?

I was under the impression that Liberty used parts from the Harley-Davidson mounting kit. I would contact Liberty to ask them. I'm sure they would have some suggestions. Have you tried Google?

Jerry Riggs makes a vertical mount quick change system,..being I'm in a wheelchair I'm planning on putting one of these on my bike after I phone and make sure it will work on my setup which it should,..it's a real nice adapter.
I like to change my oil often and this makes it ever so easy.

Yes, that looks like a good deal. As prices go, $225 isn't bad for a quality installation. On a Harley with a Harley sidecar, the oil filter is tight but it can be removed and replaced without too much trouble. The only nuisance is the need to catch the oil that dribbles out of the oil filter adapter when the filter is removed. With a little ingenuity and a cardboard filter box, you can overcome that.
I've had my troubles with my oil filter on my Twin Cam, myself. When I was installing the sidecar connection kit, the bike was up on my Handy Lift. I tried and tried to get the lower front mount to clear the oil filter adapter on the front of the right side crankcase and it simply wouldn't go. Despite what the manual says, there is interference between the oil filter adapter and the right side of the lower mount when trying to slide the mount in place.
It appeared that the only way it was going on would be if I were to remove the two 1/4-20 cap screws holding the adapter to gain enough clearance. I tried to loosen the bolts with a 7/16" wrench and the upper bolt head came off in my hand!!! The other bolt came out and the adapter came off all right but that left a broken bolt buried about 5/8" into the crankcase with no head and only about 1/4" of it sticking out. Nice!
I first tried to MIG weld a nut onto the bolt but it came off when I tried to turn it. Gritting my teeth after an hour of frustration, I took my trusty vintage, American-made Vise Grips and clamped down on the offending stump with a true death grip. Moving gently, I was able to turn it back and forth enough until it loosened. It was touch and go there for a while. It took me all of a half hour to remove it. It had been literally buried there at the factory and was covered with Harley-Davidson LocTite. The rest of the installation was very straightforward. Needless to say, I cleared the threads with a tap and used liberal amounts of anti-seize when I replaced the adapter with two new bolts. I wasn't looking forward to removing the engine so that I could drill the bolt out. Thank Heavens I didn't have to!
If you have any reason to ever remove the oil filter adapter from a Harley Twin Cam engine, be very careful.
The kit you show appears to fit onto the adapter with no need to remove anything so that looks good. I'd like to have one myself. I'll add it to my list. The list is now ten pages long. LOL.
i have one of those riggs adapters on mine - with the oil cooler mounted with the filter on the right crash bar near the sidecar body
it is so nice - no mess oil changes and it definitely runs cooler

That is the Bees Knees. Just what I was looking for. I still might need a longer piece of hose to get it out of the way of the mounts on the bike but that is a simple fix. Now to start saving my pennies.
If you had a pic of your set up Timo I would love to see it with the oil cooler etc.

Hey there timo482,
I have a question for you,.. is your bike a 88"TC motor,..did your bike have the oil cooler adapter on it,..and if so did you have to remove it.
Would also like to see some pics of your set up.
Thanks
Just got off the phone with Jerry Riggs and he has one on one of his TC with oil cooler and it does fit,..I was confusing myself about the oil lines coming out of the SE 103" cooler adapter,...which his adapter has really nothing to do with those lines,... was just to- "simple"- to install and that had me confused-:) LOL
i dont have pictures
i tossed the hose that came with the kit - i mounted the whole thing to the right crash bar, filter, cooler etc
i had a 88 in the past - there is NO WAY to get a sidecar bracket on the bike with the se cooler adapter
currently i have a 07 with the cast on filter mount

hey there timo,
I got a real good deal on a new 2004 CVO SE 103" crate motor still in the box and am planning on putting it my 2003 FLHRC-i.
Went out in my garage and looked in the box at the motor and bummer,..it looks like from what I could see (hard for me to see over and inside because I'm sitting in my wheelcair) you are probaby right,..the back side of that adapter appears to be thicker towards the frame,..which would hit the lower mount bracket.
I guess I should be able to switch the filter mount from my '03 RK to the '04 CVO,..right??
The mounting bolts and oil holes should be the same on the engine cases,..or am I wrong.
I will have to run a cooler,..I have a brand new 10 row Jaggs vertical mount oil cooler,..so I guess I would run the return oil from the Jerry Riggs adapter to the cooler, from the cooler back to the Riggs on the motor,...correct.
Is your '07 a CVO 103"??
Thanks for the input.
to use the existing sidecar mounts you probably want to bolt the oil filter mount from the 2003 engine to the 2004 engine.
then bolt the riggs adapter to the oil filter mount [this adapter is much smaller than the filter so it frees up a LOT of room]
then bolt the jag oil cooler adapter to the riggs oil filter adapter - plumb the cooler to the jag adapter and mount the filter to the same.
if you are not running a thermostat [not really needed above 50 deg F anyway] then plumb the oil from the engine - to the filter first, the cooler second and back to the engine third - you dont want to push cold oil through the filter. if its too cold outside - cover the cooler with a bit of cardboard and a rubber band.
your filter will now be pointed down and much easier to maintain
the only possible irritation is that all the rubber hoses on barbed fittings might suck - you may want to convert all the connections you can to threaded mfg crimp connections [any cat dealer can make any hose if you have the fitting you want to go to, the angle of the end, length etc]
the riggs kit contains shims to mount the filter mount to several size tube - front frame down tube, crash bar, etc.
thanks timo,
yep,.that was my plan,..I'm sure glad you read this post and mentioned the SE adapter,.I don't plan on removing the hack to change engines and it would have never entered my mind till my friends tried to tilt the SE motor in and the oil adapter was in the way,...now I will change out the filter adapter when I pull the '03 motor.
Thanks again.
you have good freinds to do that work for you

those three bolts are one of the places that you need good tools & care.

Another alternative for oil filter relocation and cooling is Perma-Cool. They have many different options and the parts are made in the U.S. I put an oil filter relocation on my bike for less than a hundred bucks. The threads for a harley oil filter are 3/4-16 same as a Ford. Check out the website http://perma-cool.com/ I purchased my parts from http://www.jegs.com/ I do have some pics but haven't figured out how to post yet. Chris
