Hello Robert,
I had once a guy in my shop who hooked up an old batery the wrong way and inversed the poles by that. The surprise was magic smoke simular to yours, but not that bad.

On a diesel truck a bastard burned with a sticking key the starter and the rectifier bridge. That brought for years follow up damages. So I'd suggest to you to be not too confident with your electric system any more.

I do not know how nowadays Guzzies are, but to my times we compared the electric system of these concrete mixers with Italian washing machines.
Magic smoke and tinkering were as common as with British Lukas "The Knight of Darkness" .

Enough of shouting wolf... good luck, but keep for some time the multi tester in the sidecar. just in case...
Regards
Sven

We used to run in to that problem with sports cars. Most batteries can be purchased with positive on either the left or right. If your bike is old enough to have a generator the damage is usually minor, but later stuff can get expensive.

Hi Mike.Yes over the years I have used dozens of those batterys in my lawn tractor and the several guzzis I have had and never had the misfortune to run into one with the reversed poles!Believe me I will look carefully in the future before I install one in anything!Bob
