$2,000 for a lower first gear? Are you talking about changing to a six speed transmission? I changed to 3.37:1 for $300 and that's all I need.

The Harley lighter clutch has a better ramp. I have that in my bike and the clutch doesn't slip so no problem.

If you click on the link in my post it will answer all your questions. It is the kit with that first gear ratio which is close to stock. I have been places packed up on road trips if my first was any higher I would have had to get off and push. The kit comes in two different first gear ratio and I did not pay any where near list or even what is on Baker web site. I got it for quite a bit cheaper then what HD wants for there SE 6 speed with straight cut gears that has noise problems.

I have the Harley low effort clutch kit and know what it comes with but a BIG part of the clutch being easier is the fact it has a WEAKER spring. I have the Harley kit I will sell cheap new in the box if any one is interested. With the MRC clutch release set up you have less effort then the HD kit and retain the stronger spring. Been riding and working on Harley s none stop for 40 years and many of those years is how I made my living. I have a engine machine shop in my basement and could buy 5 or 6 new ultras or more in what I have in machines and tools.

I am new to sidecars not motorcycles.

40 years makes you a newcomer. LOL.

The main thing with the Harley kit is it's a stock issue, not aftermarlet. It doesn't slip so no reason to change it.

still even though i have the 07 easy clutch

i still prefered the factory se hyd clutch kit on the 2000 bike - heavy spring and easy motion and easy holding.

of course what i still REALLY WANT is a true hand shift foot clutch

for a sidecar bike it would be the ticket - the spring could be rock hard and it would still be all good.

probably have to give up and make it once the economy improves and i can get some spare parts to futz with.

There are aftermarket kits for a foot clutch. The hand shift is different from a vintage bike, however. The lever rocks back and forth and does gear changes in that manner. We always want what we don't have. LOL.

sometimes we all want what we dont have..

most of the foot clutch kits are suicide units - i have seen some repop units set up to operate a cable clutch - those would work

the real deal is the trans top

to make it requires that i find a 07 trans case and shifter drum etc so i have something to work on

hand tops were made special order clear through the late 70's for police departments where guys had been riding hand shift bikes for 30 years and didnt want to change.

the real difference is that the shift lever attaches directly to a large gear that contacts the drum gear - move the lever a inch or so and the drum does a full gear change.

ive built a engine from blocks of metal mostly to prove i could do it to myself - this is sort of one of those things

The Harley low effort clutch is just fine till you start hoping up the motor as stated by Harley. I did not say it would not work but only to a lower limit then the other springs. Rode a many tank shift with foot clutch motorcycles over the years. All stock Harley s came with a rocker clutch till in 1952 when they started offering a foot shift as an option. Here are a couple I built and rode.
