1996 TLE to 2007 FLHP
Thanks to all who have helped so far. It is great to have this forum. Update: I ended up buying the install kit from the HD dealer at over 1,000 bucks. Well worth it for the peace of mind and completeness of kit. Also had to buy a JAGG oil adapter so I could use the Harley Oil Cooler. Don't know how I could of done it with out the input I got from you guys. I'm not done yet. My last item is connecting the electrical. Here I need help and maybe pics. The bike has an extra connector coming from the side. Seems to be an auxilliary connection. The connector on the bike and car have both Female ends. Standard Harley ends. Only want to hookup the brake, running lights and turn signal. They are all tied together and end in a Female Receptical. Help!!. thanks.

Hello.
I'm sorry that you had to buy the entire connection kit. That must mean that you didn't get the mounts with the sidecar unit.
As to the electrical connections, I don't know what sort of cable was used on the 1996 TLE. On the regular TLE sidecar 1999 and later, the sidecar cable (70221-99) powers the sidecar fender light and the sidecar tail/turnl/brake bulb. This is similar to the earlier connections in concept but apparently changes were made in 1999. The sidecars in the 1980s had a simple 5 pin DIN type connector with wires exiting it that were spliced into the sidecar, IIRC. All of the connectors on the Harley bikes wwere changed to a different version in 1994.
There is a cable connector on the motorcycle just above the battery on the rear fender. The connector feeds the motorcycle tail/turn/brake bulbs. To install the 1999 and later TLE electrical to the sidecar, this connector is opened. That leaves a male and a female connector. The 70221-99 cable from the sidecar has two connectors on it, one male and one female. This is brought over to the bike under the sear area and patches in between the motorcycle cable connectors and thus feeds sidecar electrical to the sidecar.
This particular cable is used on both the standard TLE and the TLE Ultra since the tail lights are the same on both units. The Ultra does have extra cables for the sidecar radio amplifier and speakers which are rather involved.
A picture of the connector that is on the end of the sidecar cable would help. What I suspect is that you could get the 70221-99 cable and change it out on the sidecar. Zanotti Motors has them at $108.73. that would save you a bunch of time and, what the heck, you're alread into the project - what's another $108.73. LOL.......
Hope this helps.

Well, I did get the brackets with the car. But as you stated the right lower mount changed for the 2007 model. When I started to price the rest of the parts I got some ridiculous prices from Harley. It was cheaper to get the kit and I wanted to keep the rest of the brackets together as a group so I can sell them later. I took some pictures of the electrical sockets. I don't know what the socket on the bike connects to. The socket from the car has 4 prongs and the one from the bike has 3 prongs. Are you able to tell me what I should order from Zanotti Motors? Thanks for the response and assistance.

The plug that you are showing on the last photo that comes from under the right cover is NOT the sidecar plug. There is no sidecar plug on the bike. That's the serial data port plug that is used with the proprietary Harley-Davidson "Digital Technician". That's a laptop computer with the engine and computer code programs for troubleshooting and code analysis. My suggestion is that you put that cover back on......Then get the sidecar manual. In your case, that would be the 99485-07 manual. The last two digits designate the year of the manual. Most any later one after '99 will do since it will show where the cable plugs in.
I presume that you want to do a clean installation. Therefore, at this point, if you have already gone to the expense of buying an entire new connection kit, my suggestion is still, as I mentioned above, to purchase the late sidecar lighting connection cable, 70221-99. That will upgrade the sidecar to fit your bike without any cable splicing or soldering.
To repeat, that cable connects inbetween the motorcycle tail light harness above the battery at the top of the rear fender. The reason you are having this problem is the variation in year between the 1996 sidecar and the 2007 bike. That's 11 years.
So it sounds like you would need the cable and the sidecar manual. That's my take on it without being able to see the bike and the sidecar as they are right now. Obviously, you need to verify anything I say since I don't have the bike in front of me. I'm reasonably certain but you need to check. If you had the manual, you would instantly see what I mean since there are pictures showing all of the cables.
The connection kit design assumes that your sidecar is post-1999 and that it would have the proper cable. The only cable in the connection kit, AFAIK, would be the rollover switch unit kit, 88115-03. That goes in between the TSSM (Turn Signal Security Module) and the main bike harness behind the battery. Instructions for installing it are in the manual. Additonally, that kit needs to be programmed in so that the TSSM is toggled to sidecar usage. That means that instead of shutting the engine off at greater than a 45 degree angle left or right, the engine will shut down if the sidecar were to roll completely over.
This change was made to prevent the engine shutting down on a hard corner since the TSSM has a pendulum inside it that could possibly be moved by centrifugal force. If the engine were to shut down suddenly while taking a hard corner, it could cause a loss of control.
While the likelihood of a shutdown is remote, it could happen so HD came up with this fix. The bad part is that you would have to take your machine to the dealer to have the programming done.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the advice. Went to the dealer and with the info you gave me, I was able to get them to help me. They are not sidecar savy and they kinda like to guess instead of using their resources to find the right answer. They get lazy if they are not selling a bike. When I told the guy he should know this, he almost flipped. He could only say why and I told him "because you are Harley Davidson". Well, I ordered the connection cable and can't wait to get on the road. Thanks for the assist. Will put out a pic as soon as i'm done.

Most Harley-Davidson dealers are good people. They just aren't knowlegable about sidecars. I doubt that they receive many orders for them so it's understandable that they may not know all that they otherwise might.
I'm pretty sure that the cable will work for you. Fortunately, you aren't trying to connect an Ultra sidecar to your bike. The cables on those are rather complex. They have the sidecar lighting cable that you need plus a couple of radio and speaker cables.
Let us know how that works for you. 🙂
