(heading for Black Forest and Alps next week...Far away from 10ΒΊN 84ΒΊW... would love to rent a rig and why not an Ural in Old Germany...Any tips?)
shame your not comming to the uk, iv'e got 2rigs. Hank
Check out this American site and see how much is similar for your Ural model. Of course, the hack is likely on a different side, but much of the info may be of help to you.
I believe you will have a blast with the Ural. More "smiles per miles" sort of thing.
Good luck with it. Post some pictures of it, as well.
Check out the IMZ home page and use the pull downs for free downloads regarding the various Ural models, and join the forum there.
These are some sites which are also helpful to Uralist foil members with their forums and/or info:
http://sovietsteeds.com
http://www.russianiron.com
http://www.cossackownersclub.co.uk
http://www.curd-riders.ca/tech/index.htm#motor
http://ural.wikispaces.com
There are likely other UK forums as well, but I don't have any bookmarked besides the cossack site. Maybe someone can post a link to them for you.
Have fun with it.

Hello Hank,
that is the same "semi-acid" answer my dear friend Henry Jennings gave me. Are you syncronized?
You never know....
Once first heading for Frankfurt and then to England(1985?). The riding inside a smoke cloud getting down from the Harz mountains during 15km changed my plans totally. I accompanied Peter and Jill (Farmery? from Cristall Palace, London)with their oil bleading 1952 500ccm Triumpf during the day and whole night to the Ferry in Ostende. (780km breathing the smell of 12 liters of oil. By the way during the night their bike rode much better... except for the smell, You couldn`t distinguish if it was smoke or fog.)
The day before the pinion that connects the 2 oil pump pistons broke.
A car rental was prohibitively expensive and a engine rebuild was anyhow due to be done, so every mile closer to England made a big difference. The oil was pumping from the tank into the engine, but not back into the tank, in stead it siffed out of every little assembly split. We arranged a cut open oil galon below the engine and every 10 km we passed the collected oil through a sock back into the oil tank.
"That was true recycling!"
From the ferry on AAA took them home to London for free.
A great couple with an incredible enthusiasmn for collecting vintage racing bikes. But with a strange series of bad luck. Shortly before a Jap racer from the twenties they had restored during 2 years broke the exhaust valve during the warm up round for a race.
=> don't bet too high, I might take your word.

For this trip my family has planed to make a round trip through Germany's borders anticlockwise. For to have an appropiate answer to my first boss (pensioned Honda dealer) when we get to my home town...on his claim many years ago:
"You know whole western Europe, but nothing from Germany!"
- Till now he is right and its time to get it fixed. And most of all I want to get to know the South, East and the area my grandgrandfather came from.
I hope for some day beeing able to get back to your offer.
Who knows if I get some moment a second rig....CR is a perfect adventure terrain for rigs.
Best regards.
Sven Peter
