Spalding sidecars
I had the pleasure of speaking to Mr. Spalding on the phone yesterday. We visited for an hour and you know what motivated him into sidecars? Te soldier in front of him stepped on a mine and was killed. He lost part of his legs. There it is. I could relate as when I was blown up I didn't get any physical, viewable, ones but the internal shock has hastened the deterioration of my knees.
He dispelled a few myths about what one must have to ride a sidehack unit and some hints about how to make mine more workable. He said the 87 had too tall a gearing in the 1st and 2nd gears so suggested it be changed to a tooth or two lower gear on the countershaft sprocket. He also said he has never ran the raked trees and said that it may require more strength to turn but he has not had an issue with it and his bike is stable to the speed limit in all the states.
He also offered his support in installing one on my bike no matter what brand or whether or not it was new or used. What a nice guy. Anyway - just thought his attitude and experience ought to be shared.
Be well
Steve
