Spalding Side
Jim here,
After long and hard decessions I have come to the conclusion and have just about decieded on the Spalding Side for my Harley Heritage Softail. I've received many comments and suggestions from people here and from several dealers,so called dealers and installers. The latest and greatest idea is the Spalding Side. My new question is does anyone anywhere have or know anyone that has or ever has had a Spalding Sidecar? I have talked with Roger Spalding and Perry of Perry's Motorcycles and sidecars and they both speak highly of the Spalding Sidecar, Roger builds and sells them, Perry has installed them, Perry seems to think that due to the weight of the Harley and the size of the Spalding Side along with my special needs of a tilting front end makes this the best option. I would really like to visit with someone who has some experience with one of these cars. Any help would greatly be appreicated. Thanks, Jim
I'm suprised seco can't or won't provide a couple happy owner names you could talk to.
Never really asked Seco ,I was originally going to buy and have the car installed by Seco, until I found Perry's Motorcycles and Sidecars, Seco is about 180 miles away and Perry is only 35 miles away. Perry installs all different brands and models of sidecars, he isn't partial to any one brand, and doesn't have an issue instaiing a car not purchased through him like others do. I figured with all the Hackers on here shurly someone somewhere has or knows someone who has a Spalding Side.
Jim
I've only ever seen one - at the USC National last year in Arkansas. Give Seco a call - I'm sure he can put you in touch with some customers.
I think the one in Arkansas was owned by Donald Fox. He does post here some but not often.
Thanks, Joyce
I've already purchased another Fat Boy 16" wheel, and am having it customized like the ones on the bike, and today I am going to put down the downpayment so I can get the show on the road, Spalding is 60 days behind, which is a good thing as I know (or it would appear) people are buying his product. Thanks again.
Jim
Update as of today, seems Spalding is soooo busy there is a SIX MONTH waiting period for one of these cars that nobody knows much about. Sooooo, after talking to Perry again about options, we have decided to go with a custom one off Ural sidecar specially customized to meet my needs. Not only do I eliminate the 6 month waiting period i get a real metal sidecar verses a plastic one! funny how things change so much, well, I know this won't change too much as I put my down payment down today!! It's only a matter of time before my bike gets fitted with it's "cling on" ! I can hardly wait!!
Afternoon,
I have a Spalding Sidecar. Have posted pics of the car with my Ultra. Picked mine up in May of this year and just finished a ride to Sturgis via the Tetons, Yellow Stone National and Bear Tooth Pass. Ran Needles Highway (16A) and Iron Mountain Road, some 3000+ miles.
I bought the Spalding car because my GF has MS and the easy access in and out was the selling point for me. The quality of the workmanship is something else. Right up there with the best. AND the access to working on the suspension, brakes and such with the body lifting up is GREAT..!!!
I've had a few issues with handling of the sidecar, pulls to the right, but Roger is VERY good to work with in tweeking the sidecar. I found a fellow up in Sturgis that was supposed to be a sidecar genius. He tweeked a little on the bike lean adjustments and the ride is much better. I obtained a copy of the HD sidecar installation video this past week and it is right on with what the fellow in Sturgis told me. It explains toe in on the car and lean on the bike, 1% negative to the right.
All and all I'm very stratified with the Spalding car and would buy another or recommend anybody to get one. By the By, my car is the 234th car that Roger has built. #'s 233 and 235 were purchased by Jay Leno and #232 by Jason Timberlake for his Dad.
If you look at my previous post you'll see pics of my bike and sidecar at the plant in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Thank you for the information. I have alrady placed my order as I cannot wait 6 months for Roger to catch up! Once done mine will be a one off as is alot of the parts on my 03 Heritage. With my wife's "special needs" I need this done ASAP, we have been unable to ride since last October and it's way past time to get back in the wind. Perry of Perry's Motorcycles and Sidecars has been in the sidecar business a long time and is a personal friend of Roger as well, too bad Roger wouldn't cowboy up for a dealer, if he would have I too would have a Spalding Side, since he's so busy I had to take another route. Thanks again.
Jim
Great pictures! I'm glad everything worked out for you. I can't wait to get mine in and mounted! Your rig looks very good, and I'm glad your GF is able to get in and out easy, wife has a prostetic leg above the knee amputee, Perry is going to make the "doorway" alittle larger on the Ural to accomadate her, hand rails, larger step and a few other custiom ideas. Hope it works!!
Jim
Understand you've placed an order else where and don't know if you've thought about it or not. But Roger welded/powder coated receiver tubes on each side of the frame for me. I had Soncy Road Custom Bikes here in Amarillo build me a Class II receiver hitch with a bicycle rack. I now can carry my GF's walker on the back of the sidecar. Don't know what your wife's "special needs" are but you might think about a receiver hitch. Oh, the GF,s wheelchair will also fit on the sidecar rack.

Sheldon,
The things you had done are exactly what we need as well, if Shannon doesn't have her leg on she use a wheelchair as well. Perry has told me since he does manufacture sidecar frames and components he will make a "rack " to hold a folded up wheelchair. I also have a hitch on my bike that I pull a small trailer with, this is how I've always hauled the chair in the past. It's very nice to know people like Perry and Roger they have both been exposed to motorcycles and sidecars for a long time, Perry was a BMW dealer in Ft Worth for 30 years, then decided to dedicate all his time to the building and installation of sidecars! We are going to the Roar by the Shore Rally in Padre Island in October, hope my rig is finished by then, maybe we'll see ya there, if your going. even if the Heritage isn't complete by then we are still going, I have two other Harley's just wouldn't have a sidecar.
