sidecars for "touring" harleys only
Can anyone tell me why, when I hit the return it doesn't show up that way on my post?
Hi,
Go to the top of the page and click settings, then uncheck the rich text box setting. Posts then look like what you type.
Thanks Joyce

well.. actually - warranty issues with hd are a big big deal, i have a 07 and im not going to change one single thing that will void the warranty till the warranty expires in 2013.. yup, thats 7 years of full warranty coverage, the first two years are free.
harley has gotten a LOT of flack & fines from the epa & the reason the warranty is void if you put a sidecar other than the harley sidecar on a flh or fltr is that the only epa tested combination is a harley sidecar on a harley touring bike.
also to keep the police departments happy they beefed up the swingarm and rear axle and a bunch of other parts to make installing the sidecar not a wear issue.
these days many hd dealers will refuse to work on a bike that has any wheel, frame, exhaust, air cleaner modification at all in fear of the epa and they also wont add any parts other than the street legal ones, for the most part, any more.
if YOUR dealer will do the work, they will usually warranty the work themselves - ie they get no payback from hd corporate & they try to hide the paperwork from the epa - but if you are, say, three states away - you will pay out of pocket for the work and wont get reimbursed.
up to about a year ago hd had all there race parts availiable on line and would sell and warranty race parts onto street bikes, no more. if there are ANY non epa approved parts the warranty is totally void. and since hd still sells one model that is a factory matched flhtuc w sidecar as a single bike and its epa ok.. you can still add a hd sidecar to any bike with the same epa rating.
the epa vs warranty thing is getting big, a number of shops in the country have paid very large fines.
expect more rigidity from dealers about modifications. and expect no humor from the hd legal department.
sucks, but there we go.

Harley has only built mounts for the FL touring machines and the FXR's to date. If you want a sidecar on a Fatboy, you could get a Liberty or any number of other models. That's a different issue from the OEM warranty, however. HD or any other company could certainly void your warranty for unauthorized fitments.
BMW for example says that you shouldn't pull a trailer with a BMW. That is a similar issue.
precicely - if a bike is old enough that warranty issues are a "non issue" then do what ever you want.
personally i think the liberty sidecars are really very well built.
but, for me, since i use my bike during the day in the warmer months for work, driving all over the state looking at jobs to bid and manging projects, with my side car full of laptop, lazer, total station, camera, piles of plans, etc etc - i need to be able to pull into the dealer and say "fix this now please" and not worry about it. i just dont have time to deal with warranty problems.
for most riders its a totally different story.
ps - the headset / intercom / bluetooth phone interface is really usefull for work. i can answer the phone at all times and basically say, im doing 80 on I94, can i call you back in a hour? keeps the customer happy.
