more trikes then rigs?

Hello Friends,
I am back from the family trip through (better said arround) Germany.
(Still with bent matches in my eyes.)
I was very amazed that I met on 3500km in 3 weeks just 1 rig (an Ural mixed in an veteran ride out) but about 15 trikes and hundreds of 4wheel cycles, plus some 7 three wheel leaners (2 wheels on the front, You find them on thousands of advetisment posters on the other side of the great spit bowl)
How is it elsewhere?
Now after work lets get the sidecar fixed... to continue promoting its use as lonely rig pusher in Costa Rica.
Best Regards
Sven Peter
Sven,
In the north metro Atlanta, Georgia area I have only seen one sidecar rig, a Harley FLT with a TLE car, on the road in the last 6 months. I see several trikes daily and even the Can Am Spyders but no sidecars.
Back in the 80's I lived in the Stuttgart area. I loved taking my Yamaha FJ1200 out on the Autobahn and riding in the Black Forest. Truly a beautiful place to ride. Let me see if I can remember the Swabian greeting:
Grüss Gött,
welcome home shame you never made it to england, next time maybe, have a safe but exiting life. Hank

Grüß Gott from Germany, Sven and Wayne,
I am living in Germany 30 miles South of Cologne in the Highlands named >EIFELNÜRBURGRINGGREEN HELL<, is only 40 miles from here.
Here in Germany we have about 45.000 registered sidecars. In total there are 5.4 millions motorcycles registered, thereof nearly 500.000 driven by women.
End of August every year, we celebrete
the great Euro Sidecar Rally. Three days, three wheels: That's the motto on the camp ground at Weiswampach/Luxembourg. This year we expect appr. 1.800 sidecars from all over Europe.
If you like have a look at this site for many interesting pics from the 2008 - rally.

My wife and I belong to a group of about 35 sidehack-riders ( most of them families with kids) and we make every 1. Sunday each month a very nice tour and have a lot of joy and fun all the time.
Arrivel on the camp ground at EGT 2008 with my wife Nanny und Grandson Elias in the rig.
Some day I hope to make it back to Germany, I enjoyed my time their. The rally photos are very good, it is nice to see a lot of customs.
Last year at Laconia Bike week I only say one rig but lots of trikes. That seems to be the general trend here in NE USA
In So Florida we have s few hack'd rigs, but mostly you see either solo's or trikes, a big thing now is the spiders, they seem to be coming on strong lately. People seen to like them.
But I am glad I got hack'd - it is so much fun - don't know now what took me so long

Hello Sigi, Hank and all,
the last night in Koelln my wife and daughter whent on strike when I guided them to the Beermuseum.... cann't understand why....- ...not even into Papa Joe's Jazz club they wanted to enter!
(For me that kind of musik was like my mother milk)"Hamburg '78 the musik was still made by hand"
On the Nuernburgring on that weekend where races and once it took me hours to get out of such an event...later meeting more then one kid in the ditch again. The racers are (semi)profesionals. The observers mostly are "want to be racers" and have to pay their toll for it.
(the famous Nuernburgring saying:"bush open, driver through, bush closed, bike caught!" wasn't valid to that time any more)
In Germany to my time as student (80tees) trikes where just something for freeks who are on their "Big brother Amy love trip".
Rigs some lovely toy for wind faces.
I'd love to be back in that time and perhaps staigthen out the one or other misstake I did, but never the journeys, winter trips and camping.
After having tried a 3 wheeled ATV on a sidecar meeting in Harz mountains I never again touched a 3 wheeler with a centered front wheel.
I prefer to monkey on my tippy Jawa rig then beeing fooled by such a supposed to be safe vehicle.
Best regards from the tropical rainy season.
Sven
Hi Sven & all it's the same in the uk, over here wanabee bikers can ride a trike on a car license without taking a bike test but not a sidecar outfit. the same rule apllies to 3 wheel cars. how does it work where you are are there different laws for different states?. Hank

Hello Hank and rest,
here in Costa Rica you find quite a few of self made Buggies on VW Beadle and US-V8 basis, but no trikes at all.
Sidecars are about 12 present in the hole country (6 were sold and assembled to diferent bikes by the Jawa Importer from 2001 to 2005), In 20 years I met 3 on the road (1 was a rig from US of which I met later the internet page of his trip to Patagonia)
One funy thing I once met: A bread seller with a vespa and a self made load sidecar with a bicicle wheel and stop break. He had seen me once liked the idea and realized it with a lot of imagination accourding to his little technic understanding. But better not call it a sidecar rig. Its a public danger running at 20 kmh on back roads escaping from trafic police.
Anyhow it is standing every 50 yards. Most of all it full fillss his purpose and helps him feed his family.
The licece for Rigs is standard motorcycle A3(over 250ccm) or A4 (open ccm) licence without any special test nor training.
For Trikes no idea.
The atv(?) 3 and 4 wheeler for off road I understand go on normal A... licence.
A 3 wheeler atv (?) I have seen in 20 years perhaps just twice.
In the last time you find a lot of Peugeot scooter (800-200ccm) with leaning double tires on the front. I must have met in the last 1 1/2 years about 10 of these.
The same thing is with indian Vespa load and passenger 3 wheelers with gasoline or VERY noisy diesel engines, they croud the streeets now in various places like Downton or the beaches.
Load bicicles with a big box and 2 bicicle wheels in the front you find hundreds for company messengers downtown or ice seller.
Best regards
Sven
