Paul, make sure the seat is commfy for yur toushie. Some folks swear by the long seat, but me, I love my tractor seat. To each his own, but a comfy seat goes a long way for weary bones to be comfortable. Rich Maund makes some great seats for these rigs. Check out the length of your legs and just how well you can fit them so that you can work all of the brakes and clutch. For someone with an artificial leg, that can be serious in any emergency situation. There isn't an awful lot of compensation one can make on the foot area, but there is some. Check out the IMZ site, Russian Iron, and Wagner's sites to see what others have done in this regard.
Good luck with it,
Huey

Huey,

I can understand your questioning me about the IMZ site. I left the IMZ site awhile back when I started on my Dnepr rebuild. I just rejoined when I found out the gentleman who bought the bike/engine in question and gave him a heads up, and to put an outcome to the thread. Also to place a thread in the classified for a set of 3.2:1 (10/32) final drive gears. Sold to a gentleman with a VW powered Dnepr. The gentleman in question has a 2 year old Ural on eBay, second owner and only 173 miles.
See: http://tinyurl.com/242hmr

He wants to do a Diesel Conversion on the Solo Chassis; I put over 30,000 trouble free miles on my Dnepr in a little under a year.

I also notice many Urals with little or no miles, I guess they are so much fun they can't stand to be ridden? I do see one that has 3,000 miles and already has an upgraded engine. Do you see a pattern yet?

About the hodgepodge of parts, it's called Hot Rodding, Model A Roadster, Deuce Grill, early hemi, LaSalle tranny, Halibrand quick change, Big Buick finned brakes. That’s also a hodgepodge of parts. I guess the 6th generation CA Hot Rodder in me. You have to see my Great uncles Charles Hot Rod; he built what has been claimed as the very first motor home. A Nash-Quad and a Redwood tree. See: http://www.humboldtredwoods.org/kellogglog.htm

As for my so called condition, it works to my advantage, I’m rather proud of who I am. If you don’t like it, too bad, go to an Al-Anon meeting. I come from along line of crazy people. But really, I’m here to help those that are uninformed so they can make a rational decision and speak of my own personal experiences. I know people who love their Yugos, the one that runs and the 7 that are kept for parts.

And to you "KID", use your spell check!

Dave

Good luck with your Foil Heads. If you both own Urals, would you mind stating the mileage, repairs, and total cost to date? Times the engine has been rebuilt?

If you start checking at the IMZ site, you will notice a lot of folks add their mileage to their posts. Many enjoy that sort of trivia. Check out just about any motorcycle site these days and you will find a multitude of bikes with low mileage on them; Urals and others, including HD. Mileage isn't necessarily an indicator of much, as you can have a bike that really has tons of miles on it, but the maintenance is poor, or you can have a low mileage bike that really had excellent maintenance on it. Luck figures into the equasion when mileage is the only thing one looks at for patterns. It is not really a good indicator of much, as you seldom know how the bike was run or cared for in that mileage as well. A pattern hasn't developed that I am aware of. You can easily find low mileage rigs on any for sale site, which generally means the person didn't use the rig as a main means of transportation and little else. Some folks find that motorcycling isn't exactly what they want to do, some find that zipping about the neighborhood is more fun that doing the Iron Butt run, some find that they love to ride when they love to ride, and there are likely a ton of other reasons for low mileage, including many can't put on a lot of mileage in the winter months. Besides, low mileage bikes are good investment material for the next ownwer.

I am not sure what the Al-Anon remark is about, unless you have a drug problem as well as the mental ones you previously mentioned. About the only time I can think of a bipolar person gaining anything positive from their illness, is when they are delusional or being grandiose. Enlightening others who don't have the knowldege sort of fits into that sort of thing. Whe really cares what sort of hot rod back ground you or your uncle actually have? It doesn't mean all that much when it comes to Urals, as, as I previously said, the common man can easily know more about one than a rocket scientist. They just don't require rocket science to work on or to manitain and enjoy. I too have an extensive hot rod background, but, as I said, who the heck cares? The mods on my Troyka sort of go hand-in-hand with my hot rod or antique auto background, but they do nothing for the next fellow. It is all individual taste when it comes to bikes and sidecars.

Oh, well, this can easily get into a tit-for-tat that does nothing towards answering the original post. I can't answer your question on mileage as to my own ride, as it isn't important enough for me at present to go down to the garage and look at the odometer. All of my miles have been trouble free so far, and I am certainly hoping that it remains so. As I said, the mileage issue you mentioned just does not always hold up as a meaningful indicator or much by itself. Many, many bikes of all makes really do have low mileage on them these days. It seldom has anything related to them being so much fun that the owners don't ride them. That sort of logic is illogical, in reality.

I think bike-bashing belongs somewhere else. I run into it at almost every website I visit.

You folks should know it off!

I agree and these sort of discussions take any thread off topic. Though on occasion they can be interesting reading. On occasion.

I think Paul's question was answered and I hope he enjoys his new Ural. Enough said. This thread is done
