Insurance
For general information, to get this information into the search engines, and for when anyone gets into the same bind that we did, I'm posting this here (this is also posted in the trip planning folder at advrider).
We are US citizens, but residents of American Samoa, a Territory of the US. American Samoa driver's permits meet Homeland Security physical requirements, and are recognised in all 50 states and the 9 Territories (although the US armed forces get a bit bent if you try to land at Johnston Atoll).
None of the major insurance carriers would issue a policy to us for a motorcycle in the US without having residence in a US state. We could lie, but if we did, and if we had a claim, the claim would be disallowed, mooting the point of insurance.
None of the insurance carriers which specialise in insurance for non-US citizens in the US would write a policy, because American Samoa is part of the US and we're citizens!
We finally found an agent in Florida, fernet.com, who was very easy to deal with, who wrote a policy for us for one month (they'll do up to three), at a rather ruinous rate, with an insurance company called Dairyland (founded in Wisconsin, doncha know). Dairyland does have a shocking on-line reputation for being poor/slow payers on claims, but there you have it, and there you go.
They will also only cover $3k for 'accessories' (ie; sidecar), but had no issue with it.
Hope this helps someone in the future.
best,
Michael
Insurance, let me see if I have this right.
It's when you make a financial bet with someone that you are going to have a crash, and they bet that you won't.
To win the bet you have to crash.
Most states have laws requiring you to make this bet.
Now Obie wan has made medical insurance just as mandatory.
