gas mileage
Well, the figures are in. I have only owned the Hondasauras for 11 days and used 3.07 gals of fuel for the first 106 miles. Most of my riding (90%) was very slow speeds mostly 1st and 2nd gear
practicing stopping starting and lots of (probably not enough yet) right hand turns. I did
ride perhaps 8-10 total miles at 55 and 65 just to get a feel of how it handles. I guess this would equate to about 35 MPG so I believe as I become more efficient and do some longer drives I hope to get into the middle 40smpg. It is of course possibly true that I may be dreaming. Åny suggestions regaring improving MPG would be welcome. Jim in Denver

Unfortunately, this wisea** answer is also an accurate one. I've had sidecars attached to everything from old Triumphs to new Harleys and Goldwings. If I can average 25mpg fully loaded at highway speeds I consider myself fortunate.
Excuse me SIR ,BUT AT WHAT SPEEDS ARE YOU DRIVING?
"Secrets" to good mileage (1) drive slow, (2) have a small engine, (3) avoids stops and starts, (4) don't carry a passenger (5) keep tires properly inflated, (6) have a "moderate" right hand (7) always drive with the wind to your back, etc. etc.
In my own case ('96 Suzuki 1400 Intruder with an ol' California I, a light passenger - Luke's only about 125#, and almost entirely on back roads) I average in the mid 30s.

your dreaming , Lush...
Most SCists average around the 30-35 MPG at the high point. driving as you do..nice and easy. the faster you go at sustained HWY speed it will drop accordingly. 30 MPG is good for most at speeds around 60-70 sometimes higher.
remember you are hauling an extra 200 or more pounds[500 for me with loaded SC] all hanging off the the side, out in the wind.lots of drag.
I just bought the Honda 750 4 k1 about a week ago so most of my riding has been
practice 50% of the 106 miles at speeds 0-20 intown riding 40 % 25-40mph and about 8-10 miles at hwy speeds 50-65. So far most replys have indicated that my MPG is probably about right.
It may go up a little as I drive more at 30-40mph and will probably do down if I am driving at lot at HWY speeds. Regardless it sure is fun to ride the Hondasauras
I actually do ride my 87 250 Rebel as much as possible but it doesn't have the cargo box. When I ride the Reb I usually get between 65-80 MPG. I t just doesn't have the character of the
Hondasauras.
I get 160 miles or so and never did hit reserve on a tank of fuel. I don't think I ever put in more than 4 gal. I'm sure I'm getting at least 40 to 45 mpg on my 750K8 / Velorex combo.
I had a 82 CB750 with a California Hack and never got more than 45 mpg empty and 39 with a load here in Colorado
i usually ride about 150/160 miles stop and put my $10 in the tank and go. really- not concerned about fuel efficiency. after all- it's too much fun. that's why i don't drive a kia. harley davidsons and big chevy v8's 4 me. haven't had to wait in a gas line since the 70's or 80's. get off the wallet!

Interstate speeds of between 65 and 75 mph. Like I said, fully loaded at highway speeds.
This has held true for a 76 HD Bicentennial rig, an 86 HD Tourglide rig, an 86 Aspencade/HitchHiker, an 81 Yamaha XS850/Dnepr, and my current Valkyrie/Ural.
Puttering around on the backroads I do better, but the original question mentioned "longer trips" which are usually undertaken at highway speeds.
FYI: Speed and a head wind cut my milage by half this past weekend. My normal average is about 37 mpg, but running 80+ mph (got a late start) into a 30 mph head wind dropped me to 21 mpg on my return from the Dogwood BMW Rally (Vicsburg, MS to St. Louis). Every hour and a half I needed fuel! It was a good rally (great gumbo, yummy banana nut pancakes and a fun band) but a little on the windy, wet and cool side. I was riding my K1100LT/EZS/Champion Escort. I normally get about 35 mpg highway, on average, with my R1100GS/Ural. Danny
Howdy, all...I'm running a BMW K1200RS with a car of unknown origin...a BIG car... and around town if I double shift and get into 6th gear as quickly as possible I get about 33/34 mpg. On the interstates I run between 75 and 80 mph but still get around 31 mpg. This has always struck me as odd. I would have thought the higher speeds would have had a worse effect on milegage.Y'all can see a picture of the hack at my blog site: http://dataporttwo.blogspot.com/
I was getting about 40 MPG with my 01 Suzuki Intruder 1500 V twin. Added my sidecar and 3 kids and 25 MPG is a great day of riding. If its windy 20mpg. "Honey this year I promise we will not runout of gas again!"
