2014 EFI Ural Gear-Up
Just thought I would jot down a few observations on the new Ural. Owned it since March, 2014 . I traded my 2012 Yamal for it which I bought new. My comparison goes to the Yamal which was a really great bike. The main differences are the carbs versus the efi of the new models. The Company is done with carbs so I am told. The only mod I did to the Yamal was a side shifter. It started beautiful and ran smooth if not too fast..a comment of every Ural owner. The Yamal could hit 60 and it flirted with 62 but not uphill. Other than that, I loved it.
I stopped by Ural of New England to see if Dimitry had anything interesting in. I had bought a Harley from him the year before and he tends to get interesting bikes in stock from time to time.
I saw the Gear-Up, blacked out with a flat satin finish and I loved it. Dimitry offered to take me for a spin in it and off we went. He lifted the front wheel off the ground and nearly gave me whip lash as he took off and with a great offer on the Yamal, I was sold . I love the Ural but I wanted a teensy weensy bit more speed and the gearing on the two wheel drive could not be upgraded.
It ran rough at start up but I was promised that a software fix would even that out. When I picked it up, it was still idling rough. I was told it needed miles on it to even out. I started and ran it every day. It was a love hate relationship. I hated starting it but when underway...omg..like no Ural I have been on. I had the side shifter put on it. If you have ever used one, it's hard to go without. I love the action, the look, the feel of that shifter. The idle though? I hated it. I was missing my Yamal bad. Dimitry promised me they were working on it. They had commissioned a private software supplier for a better patch for the idle.
When I hit the 1000k mark for the first service, I dropped it off. I had problems with the foot brake switch, the low fuel light (not working...no more reserve switch) and the speedo with reading false and jumping around at highway speed..HIGHWAY SPEED....a Ural. Nice.
At the same time the shop got in the new sofware but I had to wait on the low fuel sensor. On order. Two weeks later I picked up the bike. Instant love. The idle was much better and since then has got better. It is stronger and smoother than before. The rig is everything the Yamal lacked. Strong, smooth, fast yet still has the two wheel drive.
The low fuel light blinks on and off at 3.50 gallons and stays lit after 4.00. There is no gauge. There are disc on all three wheels. The side shifter is more complicated to install so I had them do it. It also cost a lot more. The cost of service is more. The seat in the car comes out for better cargo room.
The feel of riding is the same. The difference is what I mentioned previously. The power. I love it. It does not go on par with my Harley but brother (and sister) it goes. The speedometer is still suspect. I was told I was doing 75 by my chase car when I brought it home after service but the speedo read 62. They are looking into it. Still....when I was doing 75....think about that Uralista's.
If you love the Ural and want a bit more speed, this is the one. If you are happy with the carbs and want something you can fix in the woods, I understand.
Have fun.
