I just added an Ultra TLE 2005 side car to my 2006 Ultra Classic HD, and I cannot get sound from speakers in the side car. The amplifier is mounted under the console, and I was told by an HD Dealer that I needed to change the entire system to the newer wiring harnesses, console buttons and under tourpack mounted amplifier in order to accomplish this...all to the "tune" of nearly $1200.00...this floored me, since I am into it for a good amount already. I was able to get the mode selector on the SC console to function, and also the Intercom/headset to work by following the connection diagram in the service manual (at least I think so, as I can hear music from the side car headset connection, haven't tried the intercom yet), though I don't have any idea where/how the helmet connection should be mounted in the side car, I have no pictures to guide me, and the service manual I have doesn't iether. Could the the 2005 under console amplifier be incompatible with the Harmon Kardon amplifier/stereo in the bike (as I was told by HD Dealer)? Could the amplifier have "gone bad"? ANY help is appreciated, as I would like to get this functioning 100%, but don't want to drop another $1200 to $1500 to do it...nor can I afford to. Thanks in advance.

i got all the stuff needed to make a 04 sidecar work on a 07 bike for about 900 [hk uses no amp in sidecar there is a actually third set of IO for the sidecar]

and no - nothing on the pre 06 sidecar sound system will do anything other than ruin your harmon kardon head unit

once you do get the right harness the head unit shows that a sidecar headset is attached - works really well.

but as i always say about used sidecars - the typical seller has NO IDEA they are selling only part of the unit... and typical used buyer has NO IDEA they are missing a couple grand in parts.

having learned this all the hard way of course to the tune of about 3500 bux for mounts and wire

Thanks for the info. I asked if there was a wiring harness to match to the HK, and was told there wasn't one. I have everything working except for the speakers in the side car. Are you saying that using the wiring harness connected to the speakers and intercom will damage my HK stereo? If this was the case, I would have expected this right away, no? So long as the set up I am using does not cause damage to the stereo, I can live without the speakers on the console I think, since we always use the headset and intercom. Tell me what you think.

ok.... you REALLY need the wiring diagrams and manuals for the two years you are talking about. it will really clarify for you how the harness changed for all but the lights. [lights are the same]

on a 06 and newer with the hk sound & intercom there is NO NADA ZERO amp in the sidecar - there is a tiny circuit board and some wires.... two for each speaker & two for control and 7~ for intercom cb.

the ultra sidecar plug on the sidecar connects to the bike harness under the seat, in that bundle there is a two wire multiplex unit that controls the hk head unit - channel tune, volume, ptt etc.

the speaker wires plug into the rear speaker pods OR the 06 and later BIKE amp under the tourpak.

the only complicated part of the whole assy is the curcuit board - it would be pretty simple having the two wire diagrams & a old harness to just fab up the new harness using all the old parts and replace the sidecar amp with the little board.

to have it all "match the book" you need to get is the 06 ultra sidecar harness and the little board - you already have the faceplate etc - then you remove the amp from the sidecar and the entire sidecar ultra harness and install the 06 and later sidecar harness - that will make it all work. physically its a 7 ft long bundle of wire about 1/2" in dia that goes from under the bike seat to under the console in the sidecar - there it plugs into the circuit board that runs all the switches - on each end of the ultra harness are the speaker wires.

when using the sidecar headset the hk head unit shows a little sc icon that the sidecar circuits are active

as for me i used the speaker wires to supply power to my wife's heated suit and a outlet for her gameboy...... we just use the intercom headset assy by its self.

also on the older sidecars the normal practice was for the sidecar passenger to use the right speaker box switch on the bike and the switch in the sidecar to adjust things and it had a little dial knob on the dash of the sidecar - in the hk sidecars both switches are on the sidecar dash and all the volume functions work the same as on the handlebars.
