What Did You Do With Your Sidecar Today?

PreviousPage 15 of 30Next

Hi Sven,
Yep, when Barb wanted to quit the motorcycle, I got the first sidecar rig (Hal Thompson's Ural) to see if she'd like a sidecar. I didn't expect to. Well, her mind was made up but I was surprised at how much fun the rig was. And Archie took to it like it was the most fun thing we'd ever done together. There was no going back... Sold the Ural, added the Liberty to the Harley. Petey is my third sidecar sidekick and the adventure continues!!

Taking advantage of some nice weather a couple of weekends ago, Jena did some "static" training with Raskie, now 9 months old, in the sidecar while I was off visting at the new BMW/Indian dealership:

After which we took a ride out in the local countryside for lunch at the No Teeth Bar B-Q in Holly, Louisiana - which lived up to its name Laughing (in this photo Raskie was already back in his travel kennel in the nose of the sidecar - hopefull he'll be ready to ride in seat by this summer):

 And

On the way back home we routed thru Grand Cane, Louisiana, the home of Central School, which was a filming location for The Great Debaters with Denzel Washington:

This past weekend we met up with local sidecarist Hugh to ride down to visit with friends tailgating before a local Mardi Gras parade:

Not today, but on Saturday 02.14. I brought my daughter to the University, when at a red trafic light some "not so youngsters anymore" were filming something....suddenly a skateboarder came down from the sun roof to my left side, popped down from about 3,50 - 4 m height with his skate board on the middle of the side street, continued a few meter and stopped....
Damn it, although that guy must be totally crazzy, I pull my hat. (who knows how his knees and joints will look like in a few years?)
All in the vision of the buddy's smartphone and the 360 degree traffic camara.

Today my wife got a call, that all four of us are shown in a digital skateboard newspaper...
That goat bearded skater of undefinable age, Sophie, Kris and me...

Are we famous now on the cost of a crazzy atlete?

Went with Delma for her "last travel". She was so ill (half dead), that even travelling in SC couldnt make her tail waving.

Her first (and last) photo in rig, last year:

We trust Delma enjoyed her ride even if she couldn't waive her tail.

Yesterday was another unseasonbly warm, but wet, day here in Louisiana, so we hid under cover and freshened up the brake fluid in Mrs. SwampFox's Burgman tug:

With 62 degree weather I just couldn't keep my latest hand built Sweet Classic Sidecar at home. I was the only one out on the Cherokee Trail but that didn't matter. I figure any warm day is a good day to go riding. Out of the box this rig almost drives itself.

Hi All:
It has been a long time since I have had anything to report. My K1100/Motorvation rig had a gas leak. It has been cold up here in the Black Hills and I didn't think it was a good idea to start a fire in the wood stove with a gas leak - so I had to work on those days when it was warm (above 30 degrees). I got all the hoses replaced and it wouldn't start. The battery sounded weak. I couldn't believe that a 4 year old battery was bad (I lied). I had to replace the battery. My rig is running again but I used up the warm day fixing it and it may be 2 weeks before it is nice again. The next time you hear from me it will be to report a ride.

Just found out my rig will be in the shop a little longer than anticipated. The new pistons arrived both in boxes marked .010 over but on further inspection one piston was .010 and one was .030. Oops. Correct markings on the boxes, wrong part in one. Slight set back.

With Sophie and my son Thomas I visited the Ural number 2 in Costa Rica.
It is a 2007 1wd Tourist that donated its drunken first owner 3,5kg Titanium into his skull and needs some work before it will be possible to teach the new owners.
The gasoline was totally useless, the right carb ripped off together with half of its manifold(screws completely seized). The gear lever broken, foot peg far backward bent, al tires flat/low and hard the left muffler like a banana bent that it nearly scrubs the ground...Cylinders with carbon, oil smelly. Shock absorbers stiff.
The overall condition does not look too bad.
Luck for the new owner is, I have the spares.
It will become interesting to teach 4 family members at a time Father 2 sons and the most interested is the mother...the smallest ones will have to grow up first.

There is always a first time for everything. Lets wait and see what future will bring.
Sven

Actually it was yesterday but:
I took Judy on the maiden run of a Harley/563 tour rig we just finished. First sidecar ride we have done since fall of '14.

What I did today was ride my rig from our shop in Enumclaw WA to SLC Utah to meet up with my brother in law, In the morning my wife and I will be going with a group riding and camping in Moab then onto death valley. Been a long time since I was in a part of the country with proper speed limits, even with the electric trim adjusted all the way up we still have a bit of a pull to the right when I get it over about and indicated 90 MPH which is the speed needed to stay with the flow of traffic in parts of southern Idaho and Utah. For this trip we took the off road tires off of the bike and went with automotive tires, we had them on all three positions but found that a 175 was just to wide on the front so now we have a 170 motorcycle rear tire on the front.
Attached is a photo of the bike we are on.

Hi Folks:
I thought I had my problem solves. Evidently screw type hose clamps don't work with Fuel Injected BMW's. I had to take it "all apart" again. This time it went quicker because of what I learned a couple of weeks ago.
At this report I have it nearly all back together - again.
I have a second sidecar project to report on. I bought a Spirit Eagle that needed some TLC. I bought it to resell. I am tinkering it up as we speak.

Spent the day on the dirt in Moab.

Good to see you out of the shop and in the dirt, Jay.
Have fun with your wife and the 3 wheeler.

I've never been to Moab or other adjacent areas. Maybe in conjunction with the 2016 USCA National Rally. We've had several days above freezing here, so interest in riding is building.

Yesterday I rode my just finished (if a rig is ever finished) R1150RT Champion Escort rig home from Bill Drapers home shop. Wet roads and some rain for the maiden voyage. Today Liz is going for her first ride in it. Sure hope she likes it, she hated the Friendship 1 we had a few years ago. The Escort with the flip front and more room seems to slove most of the things that she did not like on the Friendship 1.

Yesterday we tinkered on the "Banana (coco) split" (Ural Tourist, 2007) for to get her running once she recieved a new batery next week.

On Saturday made a run down to Hico, Texas for pie on PI Day. Got'r dirty ...lol

Rode mine today into Ball Ground and back, ran into 12 bikers going the other way, in the middle of the crowd was a smaller bike with a sidecar. Only the 3rd one I have seen in our area in the last 2 years. See a few trikes now and then but one of the 10 best trike dealerships in 20 miles up the road in Jasper GA.

Hi John:
I think I have had pie at that place. We have a friend near Hico who invited us for "Calf Slobber Meringue Pie" at a place just east of hiway 281. The pie was good as was the conversation. My wife and I were riding our rig from border to border on 281 and stopped to visit old friends.
Say!! That is a mighty fine looking rig. Is that a Ural or a DMC. I only have two guesses today.
