Velorex shock

I did a upgrade to my swing arm and axle on a 1980 velorex 560 I box the stock swing arm and drill out old axle (12 mm) and welded a 1 inch trailer axle and hub in place went out for a ride and now the shock and coil seamed weak does anyone know what shock off a bike would fit
also have stock rim with a new tire [less then 200 miles] for sale FREE pay for shipping e-mail me at DVJOINER@aol .com

You have a swingarm problem not a shock problem. The early Velorex swingarm is designed to have very light suspension. this was to match up to a 350cc Jawa/MZ motorcycle. If upgrading to a larger axle to support a heavier than 300# bike you must also redesign the swingarm to give a shock more leverage.

Lonnie

Yes, it's probaly a leverage issue, and possibly part of it is alignment or how tight pivot bolts are. On the leverage you actually want to decrease, that the shock is more straight up and down, more vertical, or top mount more directly aligned with lower mount.

That is, if it was say at a 45* angle before modification it might now need a 30* angle for more direct damping effect. The 45* angle means the shock's effect is less than if it was at 30* because of leverage as mentioned by Lonnie. Note, I'm just making up imaginary numbers. Using a little padding you might be able to use a screw type hose clamp to temporarily attach lower shock mount in different locations back and forth on swignarm until things firm up as desired.

The closer the lower shock mount is to the swingarm pivot bolt, making a shorter lever instead of having it closer to axle bolt, the more directly the shock will effect swingarm travel. You want to shorten the lever.

One other likley issue, is the sidecar on a bike much larger then the 350cc Jawa it was designed for? You have up graded the axle, next the swing arm, then the frame or the wheel or? Perhaps this is just the wrong sidecar for your bike.
