USCA 2009 Rally

Page 1 of 3Next

Since many folks make Summer travel plans well in advance, and there are who will use nearby lodges and motels instead of camping; and, these often are reserved a long time in advance.....we are getting this out early. The United Sidecar Association will have its 2009 National Rally at South Lake Tahoe, California, on June 25-29, 2009. It has been twenty-five years since the 1983 USCA National Rally was held at Lake Tahoe (then at Alpine Meadows). Bob Fleischer, a 35+ year Lake Tahoe resident; and, his wife Penny Fairfield Fleischer, are the planners/coordinators for the 2009 Rally. The location and brief details:The primary site is the Eagles Nest Group Camp area of Camp Richardson Resort and Marina, at Lake Tahoe, California on Hwy 89, just 2 miles northwest of the city of South Lake Tahoe. The entire area is U.S. Forest Service land. There is plenty of shade from hundreds of tall trees. The group area is large with its own entrance. Restrooms have flush toilets, electricity, and free showers. Some tent sites will have electricity. The entire Group Area has been blocked out UNTIL MAY 1, 2009 for USCA Members and guests. Also blocked out are 25 RV campground spots with water and electricity; or, one can have full hookups. Nearly everything is within walking distance, including a bicycle rental store (bike trails, paved and off-highway are immediately adjacent), general store, a restaurant/bar at the beach (which often has entertainment right on the beach), and an ice cream parlor. Not much of a walk to the Taylor Creek Forest Service facility with its Stream Profile Chamber (an underground fish viewing area), meadows, etc...; AND!!...the Tallac Historic Site, consisting of several Old Estates (not to be missed). The Camp Richardson complex also has cabins and a hotel. Only a few miles away via a very scenic drive is Vikingsholm Castle (located on famous Emerald Bay), Ehrman Mansion, and other attractions. South Lake Tahoe is about 2 or 3 miles from Camp Richardson; and a few more miles northeasterly from South Lake Tahoe is the Stateline area with its casinos, fancy stores, etc.Pricing and detailed information and phone number for reservations, specific nearby motels, etc, will be found on the Fleischer's website. Reserve camping, RV, and motels early!...this is a VERY popular place! USCA Rally fees have not been set yet.Dogs are NOT allowed at Camp Richardson. Nearby camping and/or RV sites, as well as motels that do allow dogs are available; and preliminary information on them is already on the Fleischer's website. The website will be edited/updated frequently. Included already are photos and sketches of the campgrounds and surrounding area. The direct URL is:

The Lake Tahoe area: Lake Tahoe, at an elevation of about 6225 feet above sea level, is a natural non-man-made lake, located between in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The Lake has 72 miles of shoreline and a paved 75 mile road going completely around it. The Lake is 22 miles long and 12 miles wide. In one area the Lake is 1645 feet deep. There is enough water in Lake Tahoe to cover the entire State of California to a depth of 14 inches. Lake Tahoe is the Crown Jewel of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. About 2/3 of the Lake is in California, and 1/3 in Nevada. Sacramento is 2 hours away; Carson City about 45 minutes and Reno about 1-1/2 hours. Some amazing scenery as well as a VERY pleasant campground will be just two of your rewards for attending. The Lake Tahoe area offers wonderful mountain roads for motorcyclists or sidecarists. The expected weather:Mild, NOT-muggy (expect low humidity), sunshine and brilliantly blue clear skies are highly likely. Nights typically will be higher forties to upper fifties. Daytime temperatures are likely to be seventies to eighties. Rain is not likely. The over-all weather will likely be very pleasurable. If i planning to tent camp in the Eagles Nest Group Camp area of Camp Richardson Resort and Marina, at Lake Tahoe, California on Hwy 89, just 2 miles northwest of the city of South Lake Tahoe. Do i have to make reservation?

I don't monitor this website forum all that much. Happened to check-in today. The posting I did, part of this thread, very specifically states in my website article, in more than one place, that you should make a reservation directly with Camp Richardson. I suspect you have not bothered to read the website article.
If you do not make a reservation, and just show up, while I do suspect that you WILL be accomodated, there no guarantee that you will be able to camp in the USCA group campground area. I do NOT have a feel, at this time, for how many sidecarists will show up. The Group Sites area can accomodate several hundred...but with only 98 specific sites, some will have to double-up. Camp Richardson is a VERY popular place before Labor Day. A lot of camping places are like that. If it had not been for the general date preference of USCA...see prior discussions, Board input, ETC....I would have recommended the Rally be held a week or two after Labor Day....as the vast majority of folks have left!

The information on USCA Rally 2009 are publish also on http://www.sidecaristisicilia.org.
Ciao Maurizio

Here is the latest from Bob:

As you probably already know, next year's USCA National Sidecar Rally
will be held June 25-28, 2009, at Camp Richardson, at Lake Tahoe, CA.
My wife, Penny, and I, are the facilitors ...sort of like Hosts...

Camp Richardson will have its Reservation Desk and Telephone up and
running on November 1st.

I highly recommend that those planning to attend get reservations very
early. This is particularly important if you intend on staying at one
of the cottages or at the hotel at Camp Richardson. It is even more
important if you want to stay at one of the motels close to the Rally
site.

I cannot emphasize enough that advance reservations should be made.

The Camp Richardson group campground is presently entirely reserved for
the USCA and fellow sidecarists, etc., until May 1, 2009.....
thereafter, ANY UNreserved campsites are open to the general public.
Doubling up in campgrounds is being allowed by Camp Richardson for
sidecarists.

All reservations MUST BE made directly with Camp Richardson, NOT the
USCA! Camp Richardson's number for Reservations and Information is (800)
544-1801. BE SURE to tell the reservation clerk that you are with the
USCA Group, and want your 10% discount. This applies to both those that
are camping in the Eagle's Nest Group Campground; and, if you are
staying in the Camp Richardson RV Village. Discounts are also available
at the Camp Richardson hotel and cabins.

Camp Richardson should have its reservation desk and phone operational
by November 1, 2008.

A lengthy and detailed website page is being maintained on my personal
website, address for the page is below.
I will be making a lot of updates to that page later this
week....including information on the rates for camping, cabins, hotel,
etc.

Bookmark (favorites) this page and I suggest you refer to it now and
then, as it will be updated irregularly:

Lost the last message in preview mode, then it disappeared before it uploaded...so here's another try::

I cannot over-emphasize the need to pre-register with the USCA; and, if staying at Camp Richardson, the Rally Site, with them too. Pre-Registration with the USCA ends May 25th. Pre-Registration ends April 30th for Camp Richardson. On May 1st, Camp Richardson will start contacting the General Public that is already on a waiting list for 'OUR' campground, and 'our' RV area. I expect every spot to be filled before the Rally begins, hopefully with sidecarists, and those interested in sidecars.
The website page with every sort of information on it is:

As of about a week ago for USCA pre-registration:

149 total pre-registered with the USCA, via Tom Hansen,
consists of 141 adults and 8 children.

132 indicated they would partake of the Kiwanis Saturday morning breakfast
at Camp Richardson.

As of this afternoon, for Camp Richardson:

63 camping spaces for the Camp Richardson Eagles Nest Group Campsites are
pre-registered at Camp Richardson Eagles. 98 are available. That means
that only 35 spaces are left.

There are only 9 RV spaces (out of the 25 we reserved) left for
pre-registration at Camp Richardson RV Village area.

All but 3 rooms are now taken at the Camp Richardson Beach Inn.

Camp Richardson's Hotel is ENTIRELY taken, already, by USCA folks.
***Because of that, we are now able to have all our Seminars in the Hotel
'Great Room' !!!

Camp Richardson....in response to our 'begging', recently extended their
Registration deadline, previously April 30th, to May 25th. If you have not
pre-registered with USCA and with Camp Richardson, time is running out.
Get your reservations mailed before May 25th! We have limited capacity to
deal with those who show up without any reservations. On May 25th, Camp
Richardson releases all untaken spaces in the Campground and the RV village
('our' areas) to the general public. It was confirmed today that they
have a waiting list for quite a few non-USCA folks.

***We have a number of reservations of various types with the Camp
Richardson facility, that have NOT YET pre-registered with Tom Hansen, for
the Rally. It would be helpful for meal planning, mug ordering, etc.....to
know how many will be Registering with the Rally on site.

USCA pre-registration and T-shirt orders with Tom Hansen CLOSE with snail
mail postmarked May 25th.

We have a number of folks staying elsewhere's at South Lake Tahoe,
including motels and probably even at the City Campground....etc.

We expect many Rally-goers will be arriving on Thursday, June 25th, so we
will have Rally Headquarters open that afternoon for awhile starting at 3
p.m., for Early Bird Registration, dropping off of White Elephant
donations, etc.

As expected, we have some folks who are making a longer vacation of the
Rally, and are arriving days earlier, and leaving days later.

We seem to have fewer folks camping at Camp Richardson than Penny and I had
expected. We've concluded that a considerable portion of USCA members,
and fellow sidecarists, are not campers. Shame. It is a truly beautiful
heavily treed area, with free showers, tables/benches, heavy steel lockers
which are lockable, etc.

It's time for YOU to make that decision to come to the USCA National,
follow-through on it, and be one of the first 200 that receive a Rally Pin
(only 200 were made). If you want Rally shirts (the initial batch is being
printed this week), Rally Pins, ...or a campground or RV
spot...............register quickly with USCA and with Camp Richardson.
Time is running out....USCA pre-reg, and Camp Richardson reserved
registration closes in 7 days! Prices go considerably UP for USCA
Registration and T-shirts after May 25th.

The Canadian Big Foot sidecar folks will be combining with us. The
Pullman Hackers, the forerunner of the USCA, will have their 40th
anniversary reunion here with us. Carla King will be here to do a seminar,
as will "Coach" Ramey, and Al Johnson. The Bakker-Ryan Bonneville race
sidecar will be here on display.

We now have a full Rally Schedule, clickable from the website page.
Much of the Rally fun will be held at the Rally Site. You are going to
like Camp Richardson, and the weather.

The Rally Games and Show'n Shine, will be 4-1/2 miles south (about 7
minutes away)....we are taking over the entire north part of the Airport
ramp on Saturday morning, right after we all gorge on the Kiwanis breakfast
at the hotel picnic area across from the Rally site. There are going to
be Guided Tours too.

We have already collected some nice gifts from Vendors...and also about 25
White Elephant items, som

Penny and I look forward to seeing you here. Don't forget to enter the 'est' contest, you might win for longest distance...or similar category. We passed through western Kansas last year on the way to the Cameron and Duluth rallies. Turned northward at Garden City. We made quite a trip of it, camping, and sometimes using a motel, or staying with friends, in Utah, Colorado.....wonderful wonderful scenery and a delightful trip (photos, etc., are on our website, in case anyone is interested).

UPDATE:

As of June 1st, we had 212 pre-registered with USCA, via Tom Hansen.
Pre-reg is closed.

Penny and I are trying to get an estimate of how many folks, who have NOT
USCA pre-registered with
Tom Hansen, are going to show up at the Rally and register on site and
participate in such as the Rally Dinner, etc.

Please note!>>>....this request for information does NOT apply to those few
of you who are simply 'visiting' for a awhile.

For those who DO intend to show up, AND ARE PREVIOUSLY NOT USCA
pre-registered, and ARE participating,
in such as the Rally Games OR attending the Rally Dinner::::::

(1). How many in your family, etc., will be attending, who have not
pre-registered?_____________adults;
__________children (and ages of children)

(2). How many of those in (1) above are going to partake of the Saturday
morning Kiwanis breakfast? _____________
Will be there for Sunday morning muffins/etc:____________

(3) Do you intend to purchase one or more Rally T-shirts?
___________________________number and sizes of each

The information will be used to help decide how many extra mugs, meals, and
T-shirts we will plan for. Decisions will be
finalized on Friday June 5th.

Please reply directly to me, and ONLY reply if you have NOT
pre-registered with Tom Hansen, and DO
intend to be at the Rally.

I spoke to our contact at Camp Richardson a few days ago. Although she does not have to save spaces for us, she DID. I do not know the status as of today...should still be a modest selection left. Call them, the telephone numbers for Camp Richardson are on our website page at:http://bmwmotorcycletech.info/USCARally2009.htmIf you make the decision to come...WELCOME!...we look forward to seeing you here. Please take the time to review the entire VERY long Rally Page on the website. Penny says to let us know if you want one or more of the Rally T-shirts reserved for you...and what sizes. They are $16 each, and the final order HAS BEEN PLACED, so it is first come first served on the few extras we had printed if you arrive without letting us know ahead of time.Bob (snowbum)

Rally Time is almost here...less than a week to go. Weather is predicted to be near perfect with the daily high expected to be around 75° and with low humidity. Penny and I wrapped-up all major details today. We are looking forward to meeting old sidecaring friends, and making new ones. Next week we will be on both local radio and we will be interviewd on local TV to additionaly publicize the Rally and to invite the Public to the Sidecar Games and Show'n Shine at the local airport on Saturday morning. This will be a very memorable Rally; and we hope that you will all enjoy the many things to see and do here at Lake Tahoe. If you are a last-minute person who has not already registered.....and you intend to stay at Camp Richardson... we suggest you do not wait, and reserve with them immediately.(800) 544-1801 or (530) 541-1801. c-ya here,Bob & Penny

Just home from the Rally! We had 247 registtered and a lot of lookers. I did an interview with the local paper and it made front page with pictures. A huge thank you to Bum and Penny, Tom Hansen, Norbert Monohan, and Linda Foster and their families who did a huge amount of work to pull everything off. We just couldn't have had better weather or a more enthusastic crowd. I was able to put a lot of names with faces, now if my crs doesn't kick in I'll be able to know people when they post.

Again Thanks to all and the 31st Rally is now on the books as a very good one.

The 2009 Rally is now history. Penny and I, with the help of WONDERFUL volunteers...((and in particular Tom and Anita Hansen and the Monohan "family", who were hardly just Volunteers)).....well, we managed to pull off a good one. The Weather cooperated too.We set out the muffins, coffee, cookies, etc., this morning, and managed to sell the last few shirts, some mugs, whatever...AND, not hardly much was left after the wild free-for-all of the White Elephants last evening. We did not do a finally tally ourselves....Joyce's number (247) seems correct to what I remember. We have left-over food to go to a charity, and 50-50 money to also go to a charity. I think it will take another several days (at leat for me) to fully recover...I was so bushed this afternoon that I had to take a 3 hour nap. In the near future we will have what photos I took, and from others too, I suspect, sent to The Sidecarist for a Rally Coverage article. We heard a lot of very favorable comments on this rally (made my head swell...and it was already swollen). That's it for right now, just a quickie update.Snowbum
