Quote from Lloyd on November 8, 2013, 5:15 pmThat sounds a little low to me, but I have not had a sidecar on a GL1000. Make sure you don't have a drag such as wheel bearings or brakes, and make sure the carbs are in good shape and synced well, tires inflated properly. I got 26-30 with my 1500 rig, and get 29-30 with the 1800 rig that I have now. Good luck with it, post some pics when you get a chance, sounds like a interesting rig.

Quote from Phelonius on November 8, 2013, 9:33 pmIf the bike is properly tuned and the sidecar aligned, you should get about 35 mpg at legal speeds.
I have known a lot of GL 1000s to have carburetor glitches. Anything from worn out carbs to non synchronizing problems, air cleaner dirty etc.

A sidecar will usually cost you a 10 to 15% mileage penalty vs. the bike without the sidecar. Do you have any idea what kind of mileage the bike alone would average?

Quote from jaydmc on November 11, 2013, 11:08 amI got around 35mpg with a GL1000 Vetter rig I owned. I would first check that your alignment is close. You can tell by looking to see if you have even tire wear. I suspect that it is fine and that the real problem is tune and carberation.

Quote from sfchock on November 13, 2013, 11:37 pmIf that happens to be my old rig, the best I could get was in the neighborhood of 25. I had a blast with it, now have an 82 1100 with a motorvation formula 2, it averages between 28-30. I don't drive it for the gas mileage, I have a Helix scooter that gets 75mpg. I drive it as our old friends from the old Hacked suggested I get more smiles per mile with the sidecar rig.

Quote from draperg1 on November 14, 2013, 3:25 pmI got 28-33 with my Vulcan 1500/hannigan classic depending on speed, load etc. and with the use of ethanol equalizer which added about 5mpg at interstate speeds. My current rig (BMW r1100/hannigan astro sport) gets about 35 using the equalizer at interstate speeds. 🙂

Quote from Sidcar on November 15, 2013, 1:59 pmMy GL1500/Oxford outfit returns 30 to32 mpg (that's Imperial gallons). The Oxford is a barn of a sidecar, my friends call it "The Bungalow", so I'm not too disappointed. I didn't buy it for it's economy.

Quote from draperg1 on November 25, 2013, 6:10 pmNoticed in your post you said you have a freedom cruiser. What does that look like? Also you are from NC. Where is Boiling Springs. I am in VA but on the NC line.

Quote from Swordsman on December 4, 2013, 11:50 amHarley 883 V-twins get great MPG anyway (~50 or so). The older GW's mentioned I think rate in the mid-30's even solo.
I'm not a big H-D fan for various reasons, but I bet they do work great as a rig.

Quote from Peter Pan on December 17, 2013, 1:36 amWhen the Jawa was still working. without sidecar I got 3,3l/100km = 71mpg with sidecar 4,2l/100km = 56mpg and in one occasion (the trip: travel happy as a cow, but don't ask the cowboy) 3,8l/100km=62mpg. Might that quiet some complains?
However the Ural on its best trips made 8,6l/100km=27,5mpg and on its worst close to Kitwanga, Canada 12,8l/100km=18,45mpg. I am interested how she will behave here in Costa Rica, where appearantly gasoline is better then in USA although we blame frecuently Recope, the only supplier from the state.
So for a 1976 Goldwing 25mpg doesn't sound bad to me. Perhaps with some fiddling and fine tuning the carbs some more miles per gallon might come out still.
Just an idea of somebody who has no experience with such a water cooled beedle engine.

Quote from Bob Hunt on December 17, 2013, 7:15 pmHi Bill, the freedom cruiser is kinda long and low in front with a small grill in the front. I don't think the company is still in existence. Boiling Springs is In the western piedmont about halfway between Charlotte and Asheville.

Quote from draperg1 on December 17, 2013, 8:45 pmBob, thanks for the reply! I live in Martinsville, VA but went to school at App State many moons ago so I am very familiar with your part of the country. My roommate at ASU was from the Black Mountain area. I try to make it back to the Boone area several times a year. There are a couple of BMW rallys in the area I try to make. Hope to meet you on the road sometime. Happy Holidays!
