New member with sidecar interest (but clueless)
Quote from Guest on October 30, 2011, 8:33 pmI am a long time motorcycle rider (have owned a bike (usually 2 or 3) constantly since 1982).
I recently acquired a 2004 HD FXDL (Dyna low rider) with under a 1000 miles. I'd love to be able to either add a sidecar to this bike or trade it (straight up, reasonably equal value trade) for a complete rig in great shape.
First option may take a year or two (to gain the appropriate knowledge and save the money). Second option would get me into a sidecar rig sooner, but I am a bit smitten with my new bike, so I am torn. 🙂
(my main ride is a 2003 Kawasaki ZRX1200R)
Here is my new scoot:

Quote from jaydmc on October 31, 2011, 10:56 amI would start by taking a sidecar class where sidecar bikes are provided. www.esc.org for information. There is also the book "Driving a sidecar outfit" by David Hough which we sell for $34.95 but you can also buy it other places such as white horse press.

gearing - fork tree rake - and exhaust are the only issues that you need to think about hard when adding a sidecar to a dyna. if you very carefully read the engine specs for hd engines what you will find is that the baggers have more torque and hp due to the very large volume of the exhaust - and low end power is what you really need. the dyna exhausts are designed based on a light combination where low end power is not a big deal.
gearing - really tall gearing can suck at a stop sign with a sidecar
rake - big trail numbers make a bike very stable. big trail numbers make driving a sidecar rig just plain suck
read a LOT
read a LOT from those who ride a sidecar bike a lot
spend your money after you have ridden a sidecar rig that is set up properly and after you understand the issues of handling, fuel milage, and power.then have a really good time
