Page 1 of 4Next

We have again been invited to join the Texas Ural Riders Division (the T.U.R.D.'s) of the Soviet Steeds for their spring muster (a/k/a the Spring T.U.R.D.) at the Brookeland/Lake Sam Rayburn (Texas) KOA Friday-Sunday, May 4-6, 2012.

More details to follow as they develop. 🙂

Here's the "scheduled" events as of 3/16/2012:

Friday May 4th: Meet us for lunch en route at the El Tio restuarant on TX87 North in Hemphill.

I'm thinking of lighting a fire for hot-dogs come Friday evening.

Saturday May 5th: Breakfast ride: Riders meeting at the KOA at 8:05am, wheels rolling at 8:15am for a 36 mile ride via FM1 and TX21 to the Pinto Pony Cookie Factory & Restaurant in downtown San Augustine. Should you plan to meet us there, breakfast is at 9:30. The folks at the Pinto Pony plan to have us the [I]Dos dos dos Breakfast Especial since it will be Cinco de Mayo: 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 bacon & drink for $7.50, tax included.

IMPORTANT: The Pinto Pony is a limited service restaurant and I need to give 'em a head count by Friday noon -- so please RSVP here or PM me if you plan to come. Someone please remind me to call 'em Friday!!!

Saturday afternoon will be tech/bull sessions and/or sight-seeing/ice cream runs. Saturday evening meal is TBD.

Should be a lot of fun, just like the last one. Looking forward to itl.

Brookeland, TX 75931 is just west of U.S. Hwy 96 about 8 miles south of Pineland and 16 miles north of Jasper. The KOA is located at 505 Powell-McCall Road (County Road 212).

Find more info about the KOA here: http://koa.com/campgrounds/brookeland/

It appears the Bass Buster Inn about 8 miles southwest is closest motel: http://bassbusterinn.com/

Also: For the 2-wheel drive Urals, the KOA has access to 200+ acres with ATV trails.  Cool

And, apparently, you can canoe/kayak Mill Creek from the KOA to Sam Rayburn Lake.

Art, the T.U.R.D. is generally a "relaxed" gathering. I'm working on the particulars, but we're planning a meet up on the road for lunch** on Friday at the Mexican Restaurant next to the Dairy Queen on TX87 North in Hemphill at 11:30, then ride on to the KOA.

Also working on a group ride for breakfast --well, more like brunch-- Saturday morning about 8:15, including a site-seeing stop or two. Saturday afternoon might include some area rides (ice cream makes a good destination), sitting in the shade visiting and maybe a couple of sidecar games; the URAL folks generally get into tech sessions on Saturday. Laughing That's the general idea....

The main reason they get into tech sessions is because they want to get their Urals back home. Ice cream run sounds a whole lot better to me. 😉 BTW, I just informed my girlfriend that I'd be taking the Ural to the Ural function, not the plush, air conditioned, climate controlled Goldwing with the luxurious Hannigan attached. 😮 🙁 :o:-( :o:-(

I won't be able to make it to AK, probably until next year but I will meet you in Mountain View, AR as you're coming in from MO. 🙂 🙂

It's a test to see how serious she is. 🙂

This sounds good -- Think I'll rent a cabin at the KOA if they have some

I hope your not hungry on Friday cause the El Toro is shut down!

Drats! Surprised It was a good lunch spot back in the 90's. Thanks Harleybass. I haven't been down Hwy 87 south of Hwy 21 for a 4+ years. Any suggestions for a good cafe' for lunch in the Hemphill area?

There is another TexMex place right next to the Dairy Queen, bout a half mile from El Toro. It's clean and has good food, but I don't remember the name. I think it might be El Tio. I'll do some research on it and post back. We live 12 mi. North of Hemphill, and eat there all the time, just never paid any attention to the name.

Heh...heh... Thanks for the forewarning of the closed restaurant, as that will save me a little ribbing from Oldtimer, as I have a history of selecting restaurants that are closed-down and for sale -- even after I have visited 'em in the past month.

Looks like the TexMex next to the DQ is the new target, but please let us know if you have another suggestion next time you venture to town. And thanks for helping keep Oldtimer off my back.

We are pretty slim for good restaurants in Hemphill. Seems the local "connoisseurs" seem to prefer the taste of "gourmet corndogs" and other "Deep Fried Delicacies" from the local convience store/bait shop/ laundomat.
We have had some decent restaurants, but they couldn"t compete with the local "Ptomaine Palace's". The TexMex or the Dairy Queen is about as good as it gets!

bon appetit !

Hi Lee, Judy and I are planning on being there, I plan to call the KOA tomorrow to make a cabin reservation, and see about their dog policy in the cabins. We are looking forward to another great time, with the rig this time.

Dang, I've been on the road and missed jumping in on another of Lee's favorite "best in the area" closed down restaurants. LOL

I worked over in Many back in '96 and ate lunch at the old ?El Toro? about once a month, and even stopped by --on purpose-- with Jena a few years ago. I always enjoyed lunch there. But, thankfully, I have a fellow sidecarist covering my back this time. Tongue out But, hey, if the TexMex is closed, the DQ has ice cream!

Lloyd: We'll be looking for y'all and the new-to-you green rig.
