Devils Tower ride.

Page 1 of 2Next

I am, again thinking on a Fall ride, dependent on weather, of course. Dates October 10-11-12. Base out of Newcastle WY, a scenic road trip to Sundance WY, over to Devil's Tower, then jump on Crook Co road 196 into the Bear Lodge Forest service road system, about 50-53 Kms of gravel to the Aladin cut across. Travel on past the Historic Vore Buffalo Jump on to Spearfish Sd for lunch and a visit Ural Dealer Outdoor Motor Sports. Leaving the dealership up the scenic byway of Spearfish Canyon, on up scenic Icebox Canyon to forest service rd 231 on to the tinny mine town of Rochford on down to mystic and Deerfield mine camps to Hill City, about 50-60 of gravel, on to Mnt Rushmoor. We can take any of 3 routes from there, Iron Mt road, Needles Highway, or down past Crazy Horse monument to Custer Sd. Dinner in Custer City. A short 37 miles of scenic curves past Jewel Cave, back too Newcastle.
Riders could trailer up the 10th to Newcastle, Saturday the 11th, the ride. Sunday the trip home.
Any one interested.

Kenny It sounds like a great Idea and I know most of those roads if they have hard surface. BMW k100/EML with car wheels and tires don't do well on gravel. However a couple of sidecarist out of Rapid City would like to cross paths with your group for dinner or earlier for the propose of promoting USCA and the 2015 National Monumental Rally Harold in Rapid City

Ok great will try lunch or dinner, will see so far no one on the Ural side showing interest so the ride could be changed to all pavement.

KW

Give it a little time. There is not a lot of us asymmetrical riders around. I know of 1 ural rider that is a USCA member that lives in Hill City. I will try to contact him. If you did do a pavement ride, we might pull out of RC at O;Dark 30 and meet you at Newcastle. Just thinking Harold in RC

Let me get this straight...

Is this a one day ride? Give me a guess on the total miles.

It's a 10 hour tow for me to get there but it might be worth it.

I'd really like to see the site for next years rally while I'm in the area.

How long a ride would this be from Sturgis to Devils tower? Sounds like aood plan for 015 rally.

JR It could one of the day trips out of Sturgis. 160 miles circle tour. A little over 3 hours road time. Then How much time do you want to spend at the Tower Harold in Rapid City

I have been off the grid for a few days went hunting on the family ranch south of Newcastle. I will be home Sunday.
KW.

Weather may be a deal killer for this trip 10 days out shows low 50's.

weather is looking up for Saturday at least, 70 and west winds.

We could meet at the tower Saturday morning vist, and lunch in Spearfish?
Kenny

Do you have other riders that are interested doing the ride. Meeting at the tower makes sense. I have not calculated miles or time from here. What time do you propose for a meeting time. My other rider is on the iffy level right now. Harold in Rapid City

No one else except you fellow USCA folks.

As of now.

I'm interested but it depends on getting the rig back from the shop. IF I get it back tomorrow, I'll post and all for details.

Hey It looks like we might have a Party. The Short Brothers and their wives are in because it looks like a good fall day. Al-- If you make it will Mary Ann with you? Kenny My suggestion is that we meet you at the rest stop at Sundance. If Al makes it we will figure out where to pick him up. We are about 1 1/2 hour from Sundance so you can set our meeting time. Then we do the circle through Hewlett and back into Spearfish. From there we have all kinds of choices. Now we will wait and see how Al's Plans work out. Harold in RC

Hi Kenn
I just got a phone call from Al Olme and he is coming - so you will get to meet our president. Harold doesn't have this info yet since it just happened. We are going over to Harold's in a few minutes.

Give me a call at 605-381-8187 if you need to refine the details. My personal email is jwshort@rap.midco.net. We are looking forward to getting together.

Sounds good,

With luck my GF Stephanie will be able to come up friday and go with, 9 Am meet at Sundance? It is a short but senic ride to the tower from Sundance, then up to Hullet and Alva on to Aladan to Spearfish, Lunch and like you mentioned the Canyon is great one of the most senic for Fall colors. From there, I could jet on down 85 to 585 Sundance and home at least the upper third of the way? or heck we can do Mt Rushmore then I can head south to Custer-Newcastle and home, time depending.

Kenny W

I just got the rig back from the shop. After writing the check, I'm not sure I can afford the trip ;^)

Anyway, I've never driven across SD but I've heard it's not the most interesting until you get well to the west of the state. I'm leaving tomorrow afternoon and will stay somewhere along the way, maybe the Golden Buffalo Casino. I'm staying at the Comfort Inn on North LaCrosse. Most things are fully booked because of the POW WOW this weekend. 'See you Friday evening.

Kenny 9:00am in Sundance will work for us. If we leave Al's motel at 7:30am we will make it easy by 9:00am. Harold in RC

Great news wow am honored that Al is coming out to join us. This is awesome, I am new to this but after 3 seasons with the Ural really enjoy side car bikes.
Looking very forward too meeting you all. Btw my cell is 307-689-4497.
