For Four lane "gotta get there speed" my 2005 R1200GS/Dnepr rig will run all day at 70-80 MPH comfortably. I prefer back roads at 60-65 mph if I have my choice. I've never tried to see what top end is on that rig. My KLR650/Sputnik rig cruises good at 60-65 unless it is bucking a head wind. Last winter I put a 692 overbore kit in it but I haven't had a good chance to test it against a strong wing with the updated motor as I am still breaking it in.

never had a big rig, MZ,Jawa, Ural. the fastest was the 250ccm MZ 60-66mph at a very high gas consume...
As on my Solo KLR I noticed knobby tires get eaten up above 65mph in an eye blink and on the street bikes above 80mph and my back doesn't like to wrestle much.
Why hurry, slow is giving you more little joy moments. Smell the roses while riding...

There have been great, thoughtful replies to my question. When I take them all together, I find a common theme of whatever you are comfortable with. I am finding, as I get more comfortable with my rig, that 70 - 75 lends itself to the best fuel milage, doesn't wear me out, and just seems to be where the rig just plain feels the best to go fast. I have always liked the back roads best and if that requires 55 - 60 I won't complain. I am having a great time relearning this hacking thing.

Gotta say a little something here. We got the Yamaha/Velorex balanced pretty good. I notice that the speed gets away from me. Mean to be crusing at 60 and suddenly realize I'm at 70-75. Had it on the Interstate the other day with three up. Cruised at 75 and had a lot of throttle left, but the semis were blowing us around. Traffice was very heavy with the truckers cruising at 80 plus. After it was over, got to reflecting on it. In the words of that country song: "WHAT WAS I THINKIN?" Lord, I'll be 70 in a couple of weeks (if I don't do something stupid before I get then) and my 13 year old daughter was on the back! Reflexes aren't what they used to be and don't know how Babygirl and Mama would react in a crisis. Think I'll take some good advice here; slow down and smell the roses. I'd like to see her graduate from high school at least.
